AI expert asserts that ChatGPT has no intellect, but its utility is revolutionary.

According to Pascal Kaufmann, genuine artificial intelligence can be determined by its ability to solve novel problems.

AI systems with generative capabilities, such as ChatGPT, DALL-E, and Midjourney, are poised to revolutionize numerous industries. Expert in artificialintelligence Pascal Kaufmann stated that it is easy to overestimate the capabilities of these new AIs because they are so proficient at generating text and imagery.

Kaufmann, the founder of Starmind.ai and the Mindfire Group, defined true intelligence as the capacity to solve entirely novel problems. Kaufmann argued that large language models such as GPT-3 merely imitate intelligence and do not possess it. It is simple to be impressed by AI's ability to perform tasks such as natural language processing. Specifically, they lack the ability to confront challenges they have never encountered before.

These systems can generate poetry and write code, among other things, because they have been trained on existing content. However, they cannot execute abstract tasks such as comprehending humor or experiencing empathy.

"Some individuals use the term 'AI' as if it were synonymous with 'incredible innovation.' Kaufmann stated that whenever something is extraordinary, it is referred to as artificial intelligence. "However, from a scientific and perspective, it is possible to measure and define intelligence. Your intelligence would be measured by your ability to solve unanticipated, unencountered problems. Can you solve a wholly novel problem? And the large language models, such as ChatGPT, are incapable of addressing novel situations. Therefore, it has no intelligence."

Kaufmann acknowledged that despite this limitation, new generative models represent a significant advance in AI capability and could revolutionize a variety of industries. He highlighted their ability to efficiently generate creative and visual work, thereby reducing costs and turnaround times by a substantial margin. In addition, he suggested that, due to their access to a vast repository of data, models can generate more inventive solutions to unique problems than humans.

Kaufmann cited the value of artificial intelligence in industries such as illustration and filmmaking, where virtual humans can be generated and controlled more cost-effectively than their real-world counterparts. He also commented on the possibility of creative occupations being replaced by AI technologies.

He noted that Mindfire achieved a world record by solving over 30% of puzzles in an AI IQ test, a considerable increase over the previous record of 20%.

In addition, he mentioned that the multimodal nature of the GPT-4 upgrade is a significant stride forward. Kaufmann described the emergence of AI models such as GPT-3 and GPT-4 as a "usefulness revolution" that will hasten technological advancements.

Kaufmann stated, "This is truly a revolution, and it will accelerate the development of human-level AI."

He clarified, however, that these models are not a direct route to artificialgeneralintelligence (AGI) -- AI with human-level intelligence.
