Former FTX executive Salame won't testify against SBF.

Former FTX co-CEO Ryan Salame will not testify in Sam Bankman-Fried's campaign donation trial.

According to a 14 August filing by federal prosecutors in the United States, Ryan Salame intends to invoke his Fifth Amendment privilege. It safeguards him against self-incrimination if he is subpoenaed to testify in SBF's criminal trial.

Sam Bankman-Fried, former CEO of FTX, faces eight criminal allegations ranging from unlawful campaign financing to wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering. He is currently being detained at the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) after Judge Lewis Kaplan revoked his parole for repeated alleged violations of its conditions.

MDC has housed notable inmates such as pharmaceutical executive Martin Shkreli and Ghislaine Maxwell, an accomplice in the sex exploitation organization of the late Jeffrey Epstein.

Bankman-Fried has pleaded not guilty to all charges and is scheduled to stand trial in October. Once worth a staggering $26 billion, the erstwhile golden boy of the cryptocurrency industry could face up to 110 years in prison if proven guilty.

Among the potential charges against Salame are allegations of illicit campaign financing and involvement in fraud. The former director of FTX Digital Markets is accused of contributing over $24 million to Republican candidates during the previous election cycle.

Unlike SBF, however, Salame has not yet been charged with a crime and is reportedly considering a plea bargain that would allow him to avoid prison time.

Prosecutors assert that Salame allegedly stated that Bankman-Fried intended to assist in the defeat of anti-crypto legislators by making substantial contributions to their opponents.

According to reports, Salame also benefited from substantial loans and payments made by the insolvent Alameda Research cryptocurrency trading company to senior FTX executives. In April 2023, the FBI conducted a search of his home, although it is unknown what federal investigators were seeking.
