TECNO Camon 12 Review: A Good Camera Squeezed Into a Large Phone

Software and Performance Review of the Camon 12: Enhanced Memory, Familiar HiOS Features, Battery Efficiency

Introduction: Comprehensive Overview

This is an opportune moment to divert our attention from premium gadgets like Galaxies and iPhones, which cater to a limited demographic due to their high cost, and instead, focus on the TECNO Camon 12, available at KES 15499. Extensively covered in prior articles, this recap highlights our initial impressions from over a week ago and a detailed camera analysis praising its capabilities, particularly considering its affordability. It's poised to be a popular choice among many Kenyans seeking to showcase their photography skills.

Camon 12 Positioning

Notably situated between the Camon 12 Air, featuring a punch-hole selfie camera, and the Camon 12 Pro, both of which lack local availability records but are anticipated to hit stores soon (though this information should be approached cautiously). Despite its placement, the Camon 12 remains a competent device. While lacking some features present in the Pro version such as an under-the-display fingerprint reader, a higher-resolution front camera, and a commonly found Google Assistant button in lower-end devices, it holds merit with a commendable large screen, substantial battery capacity suitable for extended travel, albeit with room for quicker recharging, and generally satisfactory performance.

The TECNO Camon 12 is one of the best camera phones in its price range. The triple-camera system on the back consists of a 16MP main sensor, an 8MP wide-angle sensor, and a 2MP macro sensor. The main sensor takes sharp and detailed photos in good lighting conditions. The wide-angle sensor is great for capturing landscapes and group shots. The macro sensor is useful for taking close-up photos of objects.

The front-facing camera is 16MP and it takes good selfies. Several AI beauty modes can be used to enhance your selfies.

Display

Software and Performance Review of the Camon 12: Enhanced Memory, Familiar HiOS Features, Battery Efficiency

The introduction of HiOS on the Camon 12 presents users with extensive customization options, aligning with TECNO's aim to provide an immersive user experience. Nevertheless, my preference does not lean towards HiOS due to its inclusion of advertisements. An alternative solution I recommend is to opt for a different launcher.

TECNO pre-installs several applications intended to enhance the software experience, albeit many of them tend to inundate users with numerous notifications. However, the option to uninstall these applications exists, and personally, I removed them immediately upon unboxing the device.

Overall, while HiOS remains satisfactory, there have been limited complaints from users. Adjusting to its interface is plausible, and users can augment its appearance with themes and wallpapers to refresh the user experience.

Regarding specifications, examining the Camon 12's specifications reveals noteworthy attributes. The generous 64 GB storage capacity is commendable for accommodating extensive media files. Additionally, the 4 GB RAM, even in the standard model, is substantial. This strategic allocation signifies a positive direction, raising anticipation for future Camon models potentially equipped with superior processors.

Performance concerns are unlikely with the Camon 12. Though I presently utilize my phones sparingly due to personal reasons, I can discern when a device efficiently executes tasks. HiOS, despite modest specifications, could benefit from further refinement to optimize its performance, a positive prospect for the future.

Battery performance has consistently been a strong suit of TECNO phones, and the Camon 12 continues this trend. The 4000 mAh battery demonstrates excellent efficiency; however, its charging speed falls slightly short, taking slightly over two hours for a complete recharge, which might be considered prolonged in contemporary standards.

Verdict

The TECNO Camon 12 is a good mid-range smartphone with a lot to offer. It has a great camera system, a large display, and a long-lasting battery. It's a good option for those looking for a camera-focused phone that won't break the bank.

Pros:

  • Great camera system
  • Large display
  • Long-lasting battery
  • Affordable price

Cons:

If you are looking for a mid-range smartphone with a great camera, the TECNO Camon 12 is a good option.
