When it comes to England's World Cup team in Qatar in 2022, Wayne Rooney is sure Harry Maguire should start.
This season, Maguire has failed to reach his best form both at Old Trafford and elsewhere. Maguire was booed by England fans at Wembley during the most recent international break, and that incident sparked outrage. England manager Gareth Southgate was joined in his support for Manchester United defender Chris Smalling by Harry Kane, Declan Rice, and Jack Grealish.
It has now been revealed that England will play in Group B, where they will face either the United States or Iran, and will be joined by either Scotland, Wales or Ukraine. United legend Rooney believes Maguire is one of three lock starts for the competition in Qatar after he earned his 42nd cap for his country on Tuesday.
"I've been there," Rooney told The Sun. Being booed by your own supporters is never fun. You can't go wrong with Harry. Harry is someone I know personally. I spoke with him recently. He's got a lot of character and a strong head.
As a buddy and acquaintance, I've had a few casual conversations with him, but I'm not a mentor." People who booed him were not true England fans, I believe. The form he's showing for Manchester United isn't important to England fans as long as he's performing well for the national team.
"He has to play," Rooney continued. If you're not in excellent form, Gareth Southgate has stated that you should not represent your nation, but Harry Kane was not in good form earlier this season and nobody booed him or asked why he was still playing. For Manchester United, it's apparent that he isn't in the best of form right now. I don't believe any of them are employed by United.
"They're all going through a terrible moment, but he's been outstanding for England. Harry Kane, Harry Maguire, and Raheem Sterling are the three captains Gareth Southgate looks to in his team, and I expect them to be on the team sheet every time England takes the field."
