How to line up Manchester United and City players for England vs. Wales

On Tuesday, England will play Wales in the World Cup, and our MEN writers have given their recommendations for England's starting lineup for the match.

England play Wales on Tuesday.

In England's final World Cup group match, which will take place on Tuesday evening at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, Wales will be their opponent.

The Three Lions started off their tournament with a slick 6-2 victory over Iran in their first group match, but they followed that up with a scoreless draw against the United States of America. During their match against the United States, England appeared to be lacking in creative spark, and Southgate's lineup adjustments came under fire.

Phil Foden has not yet played a single minute in Qatar, despite the fact that he has been in excellent form leading up to the winter tournament. Luke Shaw of Manchester United, Harry Maguire of Manchester City, and John Stones of Manchester City have all started both of their group matches.

Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish came off the bench for England on Friday night, and Gareth Southgate explained in his press conference that Phil Foden was not brought on in a more central role because he is not used to playing in that position for City. Grealish also came off the bench for England.

This is how our MEN writers believe the history of England should begin.

Samuel Luckhurst

It makes no sense for people to suggest that England should bench Jude Bellingham when they should be focusing on building their team around him. Declan Rice is sometimes caught between two stools, so it would make more sense to replace him in the middle of the field with either Kalvin Phillips or Jordan Henderson if the midfield is going to be refreshed. The advantage goes to Phillips because he is a defined defensive midfielder and should have a higher level of energy.

Marcus Rashford should replace Raheem Sterling in the lineup, and if Harry Kane is still moving at a snail's pace, then Rashford should play up top, and Jack Grealish should play on the left side of the field. It would be rash to get rid of Bukayo Saka, particularly considering that England is at its most dynamic when using inverted wingers.

Kieran Trippier was given the opportunity to start the tournament, but he has not made a significant contribution. Right now, Kyle Walker is the most capable player in that position for the team.

Tyrone Marshall

Although there is still a chance for England to win their group and advance to the next round, manager Gareth Southgate will need to make some adjustments because the team has already qualified for the tournament. While it would be beneficial to give Walker some playing time, Trippier needs a break at right back, and while it would make sense for him to play Alexander-Arnold, he continues to ignore him. If England are still in the hunt for a game in the knockout stage, he will need to come on; therefore, England should start him here to get him acclimated to the rhythm of the tournament.

Phillips is a player who needs more playing time and must get the starting nod. Rice will have more time to rest because Bellingham has played fewer games this season, and Rice will benefit from Bellingham's greater attacking impetus, which is also valuable. I would go with Mount to start the game, but I would make it a condition that Maddison comes in at some point during the game, possibly at the halftime break if he is healthy enough to play the full 45 minutes.

There is a strong desire to play Foden in the middle of the field; however, Southgate has made the correct decision by not starting him there for City. It's just not worth taking such a big chance while he's out on the field playing wide for his club. On the other hand, I would play him on the right, with Rashford on the left and Wilson in the forward position. Kane requires a break, and we have five other players ready to come in if things start to go south.

For the match against the United States, I advocated for Southgate to keep his starting lineup the same, and he did so. However, Southgate's limitations were once again brought into focus when he made the incorrect substitutions. It is unfathomable that Foden has not even logged one minute of playing time at this tournament.

He should start here and replace Mason Mount, who has underwhelmed in the two group matches, although I would pick the same back four that held out against the United States of America with an excellent Harry Maguire answering every question that was asked. Mason Mount has underwhelmed in the two group matches.

However, Trippier's leadership qualities are important to the team, and he is a huge asset from dead-ball scenarios, which England has capitalized on in recent major tournaments. As a result, it would be counterproductive to remove Trippier from the back four at this time.

Sterling had a poor performance against the United States, so it makes sense to start Rashford, who will be direct, on the left wing. Sterling's performance was poor.

 Liam Corless.

The United States of America struggled to win because Southgate was so loyal to certain players. This was both a blessing and a curse for the team. Harry Maguire delivered a performance that was good enough to convince most United fans that an impostor must have infiltrated Carrington around the same time the real Harry Maguire was supposed to return from Euro 2020. While Harry Kane and Mason Mount struggled but still managed to last the full ninety minutes, Harry Maguire was able to convince most United fans that an impostor must have infiltrated Carrington.

When Gareth Southgate decides to use England's strongest back four formation, it is almost certain that Harry Maguire, John Stones, and Luke Shaw will make up three quarters of that unit. One gets the impression that Kyle Walker is being held back for those must-win matches against formidable opponents when a back three is the preferred defensive formation.
Walker is the only defender in the squad who even comes close to having the pace necessary to keep up with Kylian Mbappe, who may be waiting for England in the quarterfinals. England could face Kylian Mbappe in the quarterfinals. Kieran Trippier turned in an uncharacteristically poor performance on Friday, and if Trent Alexander-Arnold is unable to get a game against Wales despite the fact that England is almost certain to qualify for the knockout phase, it is unlikely that he will play any role at all in Qatar.

Phil Foden is the most technically gifted player on the team, while Erik ten Hag has brought Marcus Rashford's career back from the brink of death at Manchester United, and James Maddison was the most in-form playmaker in the Premier League when the season was paused. For Kane to get his tournament started off on the right foot, he needs a goal.
