According to information gathered by Vanguard, the employees took advantage of the runway's closure, which lasted approximately three months.

In November of 2022, on the domestic airport's 2,7-kilometer-long runway, equipment was installed to facilitate nighttime takeoffs and landings.

Emerging reports indicate that the incident resulted in the suspension of a large number of senior officials at the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, per the directives of Dr. Emmanuel Meribole, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Aviation.

According to a source who requested anonymity, some FAAN employees conspired with outsiders to take airport lighting apparatus.

"The criminal took advantage of the closure to commit the crime," he said. A significant number of FAAN officials have been suspended.Since then, investigations have begun to determine who is accountable for the missing safety apparatus.

Regular intrusions and thefts of airport safety components are carried out by a syndicate comprised of agency employees with access to restricted areas and accomplices from the outside.

A former Military Commandant at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, Group Captain John Ojikutu, responded to the news by stating, "This is nothing new at MMA. I wish FAAN management could return to 1990, when comparable events occurred at the airport. I was persuaded that it was a "threat from within." What did I do? I stationed soldiers on the runways and ensured that no FAAN maintenance personnel entered the vicinity of the runways without my permission; otherwise, it was fire on sight. It came to a complete halt. Theft of runway lightings led me to conclude that runway lightings are only beneficial for runways and not roads or residences.

"Those stolen items were sold to FAAN by the same employees." Therefore, I do not endorse the unions' decision to protest their employers in airport security-controlled areas."

According to Mr. Yakubu Funtua, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at FAAN, "investigations had been launched, and the agency would do everything in its power to prevent a recurrence.

"FAAN is doing everything possible to uncover the truth. You are well aware that the airport is home to numerous agencies, including those responsible for security. Therefore, it would be unjust to blame our staff for the larceny, and I do not believe any FAAN staff member wishes for the agency to fail.

"Note that the majority of our revenue originates in Lagos. So, what kind of employees will 'kill the poultry that produces the egg?' We cannot pinpoint the perpetrator, but we are doing everything possible to recover the missing items. We are going to recover it because we will identify the perpetrators and then close all the openings."
