Several players on Manchester United's team are nearing the end of their contracts, which might lead to a mass departure in the upcoming seasons.
United have endured yet another season of heartbreak, as their trophy drought will now stretch to five seasons. This comes after the club had high hopes for silverware following a successful summer transfer window. Even yet, United have failed to show that they can compete for the crown, and it currently appears like they will have difficulty finishing in the top four.
United's chances of attracting a new manager and players would be harmed if they did not make the Champions League for next season. However, it's evident that the team needs to improve, especially because it's likely to be significantly smaller in the near future.
Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata, and Lee Grant all have expiring contracts at the end of the current season, and it appears like all five players will be leaving United for free this summer. Though the departures are expected and none of them will be missed greatly, United's offensive options have been significantly reduced as a result. However, the club has the option to extend Tahith Chong's contract for another year if they so desire.
Another 18 players now have contracts that expire in the next two years, and decisions will have to be made soon about their futures as well. Additionally, this list includes some major celebrities.
All of Real Madrid's current contracts with players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, David de Gea, Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford, Fred, Axel Tuanzebe, and Phil Jones are set to expire in 2023, while the club has the option to extend each of their contracts by one year. For Nemanja Matic, on the other hand, there is no such possibility.
Several key players' deals are set to expire in 2024: Anthony Martial, Victor Lindelof, Aaron Wan-Bissaka (who will be traded), Alex Telles (who will be traded), Eric Bailly (who will be traded), James Garner (who will be traded), Brandon Williams (who will be traded), Hannibal Mejbri and Teden Mengi (who will be traded). All of them have the opportunity to have their contracts extended by another year by the club.
According to the club's official website, the contracts of Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandez, Raphael Varane, Scott McTominay, Dean Henderson, Facundo Pellistri, and Amad Diallo will expire in the summer of 2025, while the contracts of Jadon Sancho and Anthony Elanga will expire in 2026. All of them have the option of a one-year extension.
Despite the fact that several players have one-year extensions on their contracts, there is still the possibility that the majority of the squad may be released for nothing in the upcoming years. It would be awful to lose some players, but it may also be a blessing and an opportunity to reshape the team.
