Manchester United vs. Sheriff: Cristiano Ronaldo's reaction and three wasted opportunities

On Thursday evening, Man United won the Europa League match against Sheriff Tiraspol by a score of 2-0.

On Thursday, Manchester United earned their first win of the Europa League group stage by cruising to a 2-0 victory over Sheriff Tiraspol. The match was played in comfortable fashion.

United's first encounter in Group E was a loss to Real Sociedad at Old Trafford, but they bounced back nicely against Moldova. Real Sociedad was the team who defeated United. The game's first goal was scored by Jadon Sancho, who finished off a beautiful team play with a feint and a brilliant finish into the bottom corner of the net. In the final minute of play before halftime, Cristiano Ronaldo put away his first goal of the year from the penalty spot to put an end to the competition

The team captained by Erik ten Hag remained in third gear during the non-eventful second half, during which they patiently saw out the match in order to secure all three points. Here are four things that you might have forgotten about.

This training obligation for Ten Hag is still in effect.

Ten Hag has given several of his players the assignment to improve their play with their less dominant foot during practice over the past week, and this focus continued into the warm-ups for the game that they were preparing for.

Coach Eric Ramsay had the center-back pairing of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez run a drill in which they had to pass the ball forwards on the side of the field that was not their preferred position. This meant that Varane would use his left foot and Martinez would use his right foot. The manager has pinpointed this as an area that needs improvement, and doing so can only be to United's advantage.

Massive support from the community, particularly for Ronaldo

Even though they were the 'home' team, Sheriff had to travel more than an hour and a half to get to the game from their city of Tiraspol, which is where they call home. This is due to the fact that the city in question is located in Transnistria, an unrecognized breakaway entity on the border with Ukraine, and the game had to be moved because of safety concerns.

Instead, it was played at the Zimbru Stadium, which is located in Chisinau, the capital city of Moldova. This stadium is the home of FC Zimbru Chisinau, which was the most successful club in the country before to Sheriff's rise to popularity. Because Sheriff are not nearly as well-known in certain areas, there was a large amount of vocal support from the community for United. The villagers clapped for the team as they entered the field, applauded when they scored, and gave them a warm welcome when they arrived at their hotel and the venue where the game was played. Chants of "siu" could be heard frequently, and Ronaldo in particular was very well received by the crowd.

Sancho dedicates goal

After scoring an excellent goal, Sancho celebrated by going into his sock, pulling out one of his shin pads, and pointing toward it. This was the first goal scored by Sancho's team. The little supporter presented the winger with the customized pads, and Sancho not only wore them during the game to show his appreciation, but he also made sure to thank the supporter by devoting the goal to him. Lovely little detail.
