Kenyan Maasai recognized Murphy's free-kick at Manchester United.

While he was on vacation, the former Liverpool player was taken aback when members of the spear-wielding tribe decided to phone him.

Danny Murphy, a former midfielder for Liverpool, recently said that while he was on vacation in Kenya, "spear-carrying Maasai" recognized him because of his goal scored 22 years ago against Manchester United.

In December of 2000, Murphy scored the first of his three winning goals at Old Trafford when he struck home a superb free-kick just before half-time. This goal secured Liverpool's first victory away from United for a decade, and it was Liverpool's first win away from United in ten years.

Murphy became recognized all over the world as a result of his goal, which secured Liverpool three points against their most formidable opponents. Years later, Murphy was surprised to learn that his goal had led to his fame across the world.

The 45-year-old man was recently quoted by the Daily Star as saying, "I was in Kenya with the family in the Maasai Mara. It was a great area, but there was no phone coverage, and we were out in the woods living in glorified tents."

"The guy who was looking out for us inquired if everything was going okay, and I responded by saying that everything was wonderful. Fantastic. There is only one thing: you weren't able to give me the scores of the football game, were you?' He instructed me to come with him, so we moved off together through the main camp, passing by the areas where the personnel worked and resided," he continued.

We found ourselves in what appeared to be a very large shed, as it was made of brick and had a corrugated iron roof. When I came in, there were approximately thirty Maasai in the room with me. They were not acting as though they were Maasai for the sake of the children; rather, they looked authentic.

On top of a chest of drawers, there was a bucket full of drinks and a television that was as big as my iPad. It was so faint that you could hardly make out the football, but it was on there. Everyone was gathered around the television to watch Liverpool play Southampton.

"To tell you the truth, I didn't give it a second's thought that I would do anything other than walk inside, grab a beer, and watch the game. However, nearly as soon as I come in the door, one of them turns around and says, "Danny Murphy" while pointing his spear in my direction. Free-kick. Liverpool, and Manchester United'"

Murphy spent the years 1997 to 2004 playing for Liverpool, during which time he scored 44 goals in 246 matches for the club. After that, he spent one season playing for his previous team, Crewe Alexandra.

During his career, he also played for Charlton Athletic, Tottenham Hotspur, Fulham, and Blackburn Rovers; yet, he freely admits that his time spent with Liverpool is what the majority of fans all over the world remember him for.

"I have traveled all over the world, and wherever I've been on the planet, a Liverpool person, a Liverpool supporter, or a football supporter will mention the Manchester United goals," he said. "Everywhere I've been on the planet, a Liverpool person, a Liverpool supporter, or a football supporter will mention the Manchester United goals."

Since Murphy's retirement in October 2013, he has been active in the media as a pundit.
