Tyrell Malacia, who plays for Manchester United, has admitted that he had a disagreement with Louis van Gaal after the manager told him that he would be playing for the Netherlands in the position of center back rather than left back.
During his country's 1-0 victory over Belgium in the UEFA Nations League match that took place on Sunday night, Malacia entered the game as a halftime substitute. Virgil van Dijk of Liverpool scored the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute, and Virgil van Dijk of Manchester United helped the Netherlands keep a clean sheet in the process.
Malacia's substitution for Nathan Ake, who was playing for Manchester City, caused some fans' eyebrows to be raised when Van Gaal made the substitution. Fans were anticipating that Daley Blind would move into a more central position after coming in from left wing-back and that Malacia would be utilized on the flanks.
Despite this, Blind continued to play on the left side of the defense, while Malacia spent the entirety of the second half playing alongside Van Dijk as a left-sided center back. After the match, Malacia admitted that he was not entirely comfortable with the role that was being asked of him, and he even disclosed that he disagreed with Van Gaal when he found out why he would be playing as a center-back. Malacia was playing as a center-back because Van Gaal wanted him to play that position.
According to an article published in the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, Malacia was quoted as saying, "I went two or three times too much forward." It is not possible to do that in this position and time frame. But other people pointed out my errors.
"At the time, I did not agree with it, that much is true. You got that right. After the game, we spent some time reflecting on that particular moment in time, and then it was over. At this point, I have no concerns about flying with United. The head coach of the national team believes that I ought to be able to play in the middle of the defense as well. But I'm most comfortable on the left."
