The former Manchester United midfielder described how Sir Alex Ferguson never revealed "the genuine reason" for why a player was benched, even if the player had been asked directly.

This season, Erik ten Hag has chosen not to start a number of high-profile players, including club captain Harry Maguire, Jadon Sancho, and most notably Cristiano Ronaldo. Among the other players Erik ten Hag has benched are Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo. During his time as manager, Sir Alex didn't shy away from doing the same thing, and Scholes was one of the players he occasionally benched.
Scholes admitted that he didn't like being left out by his boss, but he outlined how he would still make those on the sidelines feel just as valued as the Manchester United players who were on the pitch. He stated this while participating in BT Sport's Premier League Storybook podcast, which will be made available on Saturday. "I don't think anybody's ever cool with not playing," he said.
However, that could be understood. I was moving into that position as a central midfielder and transitioning into it. When I was playing in the central midfield position, the manager was trying to teach me how to become a different player, one who was more disciplined on the field.
"Coming from a forward position, where my primary focus was on goal scoring, the defensive side of the game wasn't something I was used to doing," said the player. Scholes continued by saying that "[Sir Alex] was the only manager who could leave you out while still making you feel like a million dollars."
"Even after all that, he'd still make you feel motivated, like you're the best player, like you could come on and change the game. He would never reveal the true reason [why you weren't playing], but anyone with even a modicum of common sense would have known what was going on.
"I quickly needed to figure out how to be a part of a midfield that was more disciplined," said the player.
