Erik ten Hag discusses the triumph with Thierry Henry, Patrice Evra, and Alan Shearer.
After the former Arsenal great Thierry Henry questioned Portugal player Bruno Fernandes's influence on the team, Erik ten Hag took a playful jab at Henry in reference to Bruno Fernandes's goal that was scored in the 2-0 win over Tottenham on Wednesday.
The playmaker scored his second goal of the season at the 69-minute mark to give United a two-goal cushion and help them extend their win streak to five games without a loss. A number of people were unhappy with Fernandes' performance throughout this season due to his productivity.
Before the Spurs victory, he defended his efforts by saying, "I want to score my goals, I want to assist more but that will never be an issue." (I want to score my goals; I want to assist more.) Obviously, class is not something that can be gained or lost; you either have it or you don't. However, difficulty is what makes life interesting, and I need to challenge myself.
"If my work rate is there, if the work I have been doing for the team is okay, I am quite sure I will get my goals and assists," the player said. "If my work rate is there, if the job I have been doing for the team is okay." Henry gave his opinion on the topic when appearing on Amazon Prime in the minutes leading up to the start of the match at Old Trafford.
He said that, in contrast to when he first arrived at United, notable players such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Christian Eriksen were now impeding Fernandes' production at the club. "As far as I'm concerned, there can only be one conductor in an orchestra. Henry remarked that "he controls the tempo of the game."
"When he [Fernandes] first arrived, it was all about him, and the stats he had in his first season were the ones you have after three or four seasons at a club," said the manager. It was inevitable that it would go a little bit lower, but when Ronaldo showed up, the ball went to Ronaldo, a penalty went to Ronaldo, and a free kick went to Ronaldo, your confidence went down a little bit.
"Eriksen arrives. It is not possible to play with two or three balls at once. Because you have less possession of the ball, you are unable to influence the pace of the game. Absolutely, the numbers were fantastic; but, I'm afraid you only have one conductor who is capable of leading the orchestra.
During Henry's post-match interview, Ten Hag brought up the criticism that Henry had voiced prior to the match and made it apparent that he had heard it. When he was talking about Fernandes, he asked Henry with a smile, "Bruno score, ey?" before laughing with the Frenchman. Henry was referring to Fernandes's goal against Bruno.
