After an explosive interview with the TV presenter and journalist Piers Morgan, Cristiano Ronaldo has cast serious doubt on his future with Manchester United, which raises serious concerns about his future with the club.
Ronaldo has voiced his disapproval of the club, claiming that they 'betrayed' him, as well as the manager Erik ten Hag and the Glazer family's ownership of the club. Ronaldo also claimed that Erik ten Hag showed him 'no respect.' It is believed that members of the team were offended by his comments, and they are of the opinion that he should leave Old Trafford before the month of January comes to a close.
Since Ronaldo's Old Trafford contract is set to expire at the end of the current season and it was already highly unlikely that it would be renewed prior to the details of his interview with Morgan being made public, there is virtually no chance that he will continue to play for Manchester United after the summer transfer window closes.
As a result of the hiring of Ten Hag, United have begun to embrace a new philosophy and a sense of togetherness so far in this season. Anyone who undermines him will be punished, just as Ronaldo found out when he refused to step off the bench against Tottenham last month. The Dutchman is very big on discipline, and he has drilled a new culture into the club. This means that anyone who undermines him will be punished.
But despite the fact that Ronaldo is by far and away the most famous player that Ten Hag has managed during his career up to this point, he has never been afraid to make tough choices when the situation demanded it in the past. During his time at Ajax, Ten Hag found himself in a situation in which he needed to demonstrate to one of his players who the captain of the team was.
Noa Lang, who had scored a hat trick on his league debut for Ajax just over a fortnight earlier, decided to challenge Ten Hag from the middle of the pitch during the second round of the Dutch cup in 2019. The match was against SC Telstar, who played in the second division. Ten Hag had given Lang the order to "run deep," which prompted Lang to lodge a complaint with Ten Hag.
Ten Hag responded to Lang's challenge by telling the winger to "shut up and listen." Lang's challenge prompted Ten Hag's response. It was evidence that demonstrated Ten Hag does not shy away from upsetting those he is working with, as this evidence demonstrated.
In the end, Lang's attitude became such a cause for concern that the hierarchy of Ajax entertained the idea of loaning him out to another club for a short period of time. Ten Hag, however, did not agree with that and instead gave the order for him to be sold in a manner that would be permanent.
Marcel van de Kraan, a Dutch football expert, recalled that situation and drew comparisons with the one that is currently taking place with Ronaldo. He said, "He's [Ten Hag has] had a similar situation – but not quite – at Ajax when Noa Lang, who is a Dutch international and has just landed in Doha with the Dutch squad [for the World Cup], was having a bit of stardom around him, giving him a big mouth, seeking confrontation
"That was all in plain view; the majority of things that have occurred here [with Ronaldo] have taken place on the training ground or away from everyone, with the exception of the incidents in which Ronaldo walked away into the tunnel and left the team [against Rayo Vallecano and Tottenham Hotspur]." But when he butted heads with Noa Lang, Ten Hag showed some balls and got really, really aggressive with him.
"And [he] also demonstrated that he was prepared to forget about it and work with him once more, until the time came during the holiday break when he realized that right, we need to take action in this situation. The sporting director at the time, Marc Overmars, responded by asking, "Okay, shall we put him out on loan?" Do you have any idea what Erik's response was to the question? "No, sell him at this time."
"When I saw this whole saga with Ronaldo over the weekend and this interview, this was kind of the signal that came to mind. "There is no way he's going to have him [Ronaldo] back," I thought to myself. "Ten Hag is not going to have him [Ronaldo] back."
Ten Hag is unlikely to be afraid of making an example of Ronaldo and showing him the exit, which is something that Ronaldo has wanted all along. With Van de Kraan's comments in mind, this is something that Ten Hag is unlikely to be afraid of doing. The decision that Ten Hag makes regarding this matter ought to be respected by United, and the organization ought to back him no matter what he chooses to do.
