David de Gea's difficulties with the ball at his feet held United back last season, and the much-needed switch to a modern goalkeeper in Onana could entirely transform United's pressing, defending, and playmaking.

No significant defensive additions have been made as of yet, so the defense should resemble last year's unit. Jonny Evans has been signed to a short-term contract so he can participate in preseason, and he may yet be offered a contract given the uncertainty surrounding Harry Maguire's future. Tyrell Malacia is presently sidelined and may not play against Julen Lopetegui's squad.

Mason Mount represents the significant midfield addition. Last season, Casemiro and Christian Eriksen formed an outstanding partnership, but both are now in their 30s and cannot be relied upon to play every game.

Mount resolves this issue by ostensibly replacing Eriksen in the starting lineup, thereby providing the creative Dane with a strong bench option. Fred remains with the club for the time being, but he is up for sale as he enters the final year of his contract, and he could be transferred before the start of the season.

Exciting teenager Kobbie Mainoo would be in the squad, but a preseason injury will prevent him from playing at the beginning of the season. Scott McTominay's injury could keep him in Manchester despite West Ham's interest, though Manchester United are also open to acquiring Sofan Amrabat. The injury may have also granted Donny van de Beek a reprieve, allowing him to earn a roster berth despite his uncertain future.

Ten Hag struggled last season with Cristiano Ronaldo, Anthony Martial, and Wout Weghorst, but Hojlund provides him with a reliable striker option. United insiders acknowledge that the Dane's youth and lack of experience may prevent him from starting every game, which could result in Martial or Rashford starting up front on occasion to relieve the burden on their new rough diamond.
