Even though Liverpool booked their place in this weekend's FA Cup quarter-finals, most of Manchester United's team was given some time off, the duty for putting some agony on the Merseysiders hasn't been totally absolved from their shoulders. Read on to find out why.
A Premier League match between United and Liverpool was scheduled for tomorrow, however that game has been postponed due to Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool taking part in the FA Cup quarter-final instead of the Premier League match. While the majority of the Manchester United squad is relaxing at the moment, midfielder James Garner is preparing for what could be the most important game of his young career so far.
In his first season in the Championship, Garner has been exceptional for Nottingham Forest, who have advanced to the final eight of the FA Cup after victories against Arsenal and Leicester City at the City Ground. Garner, a 20-year-old midfielder on loan from Manchester United, has been outstanding during the Reds' journey to the last eight of the FA Cup.
His performances in front of the television cameras during Forest's play-off push have also caught the attention of the Old Trafford faithful, and for United academy graduates, there are few opportunities more significant than the chance to inflict an upset on Liverpool in the FA Cup final on Sunday. It would be particularly wonderful if a United player were to put a stop to their aspirations of winning the Premier League.
Despite the fact that Garner has made 55 appearances for Forest since joining on loan in the middle of last season, his performance has improved significantly since the appointment of Steve Cooper as head coach in September of last year, a coach who Garner was familiar with having served as the captain of Cooper's England Under-17 team.
He has established himself as a crucial member of the Forest midfield and will have the opportunity to impress the next United boss during pre-season, when he will return to the club with the knowledge that there are vacancies in the heart of the pitch.
Garner's Forest teammate Jack Colback, who has 178 Premier League matches to his record, knows what it takes to play in midfield at the highest level, and he believes the United youngster has what it takes to play in the top tier.
To Colback's knowledge, Garner possesses all of the necessary characteristics to compete in the Premier League.
"On the ball, he's excellent, and his technical passing range is exceptional, but he also brings the other side, which is defensive ability. I believe he doesn't get enough credit for this, but he's an extremely good defensive player who covers a lot of ground and makes a lot of tackles, which is essential.
"It's important for Jimmy to keep his head down and work hard, and never to think that you've accomplished enough, but he stands a chance against anyone."
Forest have been in excellent form since Cooper's arrival, while Garner has benefited from a loan move to the Championship after a difficult few months at Watford at the start of last season.
In terms of performance, he's been outstanding thus far, and in recent months he's been one of our most consistent starters." At the time, the loan that he has obtained is proving to be really advantageous to him "Cooper expressed himself.
"It's crucial now that this continues to be the case for the remainder of the season, so that he can finish the season as a stronger player than he was before he came. That is always the goal of a loan, and when that is the case, everyone benefits."
His parent club, as well as ours, is a large organization, and he is relishing the opportunity to be a significant member of both. We couldn't be happier with him, and we're doing everything we can to help him succeed.
It is critical to us that we treat loan players as if they are our own; we believe this is quite vital. At the moment, we are seeing positive results; but, we must continue to improve even further with him."
In spite of his desire to shine against Liverpool, Garner has been with Manchester United since the age of eight, and he was born and raised in Birkenhead, so he will be surrounded by Liverpool fans.
Colback observed something about him before the Gunners' match in the third round: his performance against Arsenal and Leicester City this season says he's a player who thrives in big games.
'Jimmy is ecstatic about it, and I think it was before the Arsenal game that he couldn't stop talking about it; we had a league game before that, and I told him 'you need to concentrate on the league game,' but he was insistent that "we have Arsenal."
There are few players in the league as confident and skilled as Jimmy this season, and he can't wait to get started."
Given the number of games we've played, we haven't had much time to train, but he'll be excited for it. I know he has friends who support Manchester United, and I'm sure he also has friends who love Liverpool. He's really looking forward to it, and he'll thrive on the challenge." "I'm hoping he has a terrific game for us tonight."
Garner's set-piece delivery has developed into a key weapon for Forest, which could be crucial given the fact that they are unlikely to be given many chances against Liverpool. However, while this is another opportunity for Garner to remind his parent club of his own qualities, Cooper is confident that the youngsters will treat it as if it were any other game.
It should never be understated how exceptional that team is for young players, since he recently was called up to the England Under-21s. "He wants to play well in every game he plays, that's the type of man he is," he added.
As he should when representing this club, he treats each game with the utmost seriousness and importance possible.
