Man United is on the lookout for a surprise prospective transfer target who is on the verge of becoming a free agent.

Dundee United goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist is reportedly being scouted by Manchester United ahead of a possible free transfer swoop for the player.

According to the Daily Mirror, the 30-year-old is reaching the end of his contract and has surfaced as a surprise target to replace David de Gea in goal, who is currently out injured.

Despite the fact that Siegrist appears to be an adequate player with lots of experience, Manchester United supporters may be forgiven for feeling a little underwhelmed by the potential of this transfer.

This is not the type of acquisition that the Red Devils should be concentrating on at a time when they need to make a statement in the transfer market and significantly rebuild their squad in order to become championship contenders once more.

United fans may believe that signing Siegrist on a free transfer is a wise move, but they may also believe that the club should be considering a long-term replacement for David De Gea as a first choice.

In spite of the fact that he continues to play at a high level, the Spanish shot-stopper has exhibited signs of decline in recent years, and he will not be able to maintain that level indefinitely.

In terms of who could be their future number one, it appears that Manchester United do not have any real intentions at this time.
