Opinion: Manchester United will chose Ten Hag over Mauricio Pochettino, and here's why it's the perfect move.

The difficult finish to Mauricio Pochettino's tenure as manager of Paris Saint-Germain has not gone ignored by the major decision-makers at Manchester United, and you can bet your last dollar on it.

Marca reports that the Argentine appears to be losing control of the PSG dressing room, and that he is also losing his cool, as he lashed out at his players' "terrible" performance in the 3-0 defeat over Monaco, which he called "a disgrace in sports terms."

A difficult task may lie ahead at the Parc des Princes, given that Ligue 1 success is more of a foregone conclusion than a true achievement, and that everything is dependent on success in the Champions League.

So far, Pochettino has lost out on one league title in his first season in charge, and his team has been eliminated from the Champions League in humiliating fashion once more with their recent defeat at Real Madrid.

Because of the disappointment of the managers who have come after him, the key figures at Manchester United are unlikely to be interested in hiring someone who has experienced such failure. Pochettino has clearly regressed since his tremendously impressive spell at Tottenham, though even that ended poorly, even if some have forgotten it because of the disappointment of the managers who have come after him.

Mauricio Pochettino's PSG struggles

After being startled to learn of Pochettino's interest in the Old Trafford position, Ed of PSG Talk recently told me that he would "pack Pochettino's bags and bring him to Manchester" himself after learning of the connection.

No, he wasn't the driving force behind the club's success, but was he lucky enough to be a part of a stellar group of players at Tottenham?

Initially, it may have appeared as though Pochettino was the driving force behind Harry Kane's meteoric rise to prominence, but it now appears that the Argentine coach simply inherited a generational talent who has, if anything, improved his game even further since working under Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, becoming a world-class number ten at the same time as being a world-class number nine.

He also managed to take over as head coach of the Spurs at a time when several of the traditional big six were going through transitional phases themselves. His team came within a whisker of winning the Premier League in 2015/16 despite the fact that Chelsea were in disarray and finished 10th, while Liverpool's project under Jurgen Klopp had only just begun, with the Reds finishing 8th, while Manchester United were stumbling under Louis van Gaal, and even Manchester City were looking a little flat in their final season under Manuel Pellegrini.

The following season, despite the fact that Chelsea recovered and overtook Pochettino's team, Arsenal and Manchester United were both outside the top four, with Liverpool just scraping into the top four and Man City finishing third because they were still finding their feet under Pep Guardiola.

Pochettino had already shown indications of fraying by the time he lead Tottenham to the Champions League final in 2018/19, with the run to the final covering some very bad league results at the time, while silverware remained a distant dream for the manager.

The fact that Pochettino has twice been passed over for the United job is well known, and I have it on good authority that, despite the fact that some Old Trafford figures are huge admirers of his, there have also been enough doubters to mean that he has never quite been in the position to land the job as some media reports have suggested.

He is the favourite to take over at United.

Mauricio Pochettino's name is being mentioned once more, but there is a growing belief that MUFC will ultimately choose Ajax manager Erik ten Hag as their new manager. His emergence as a favorite has been reported by a number of media outlets lately, and it's simple to see why.

The Dutch strategist appears to be the next Jurgen Klopp or Pep Guardiola in the making, whilst the impression is that we have already seen the boundaries of what Mauricio Pochettino is capable of as a manager. While he clearly made an impression during his time with the Spurs, his best work occurred around five years ago, and with the caveats that have been highlighted. The possibility that he was a future Manchester United manager will have been raised legitimately at the time, and those doubters may now believe they have been proven correct.
