In 2014, Manchester United were in a state of alarming disarray.
Sir Alex Ferguson retired and handed over the reigns of England's top football club to David Moyes, who struggled to match his compatriot's standards and was consequently ousted less than a year after taking over.
Man United finally hired Louis van Gaal, but there was a period during which Ryan Giggs served as interim manager, and Ferguson appears to have taken it upon himself to atone for his error in suggesting Moyes for the job by hiring Pep Guardiola.
At the time, Guardiola was managing over in Germany with Bayern Munich following four incredibly successful years at Barcelona. And Ferguson believes the Spaniard could be lured with a move to the Premier League.
Guardiola remembered his private meeting with Ferguson, where he acknowledges that due to his then-poor grasp of the English language, he's not sure to this day whether he was actually offered the Manchester United job or not.
"He invited me to a fantastic restaurant, where we had an absolute blast. When Sir Alex [Ferguson] spoke swiftly, my English was not always clear; I occasionally had difficulty understanding him "Guardiola explicated.
"That is why I was unsure whether I had received an offer or not. It was a nice supper, as it had always been with me since I began as a coach; he was very gentle, and we had a wonderful time together."
As previously said, United would hire Van Gaal rather than attempt to acquire Guardiola from Bayern Munich. Nevertheless, the Spaniard eventually made his way to the Premier League.
Guardiola joined Manchester City in 2016 after three years at Bayern Munich, where he has won three Premier League crowns, an FA Cup, and four League Cups.
