Sterling should have been substituted for the Manchester United player, according to Merson.

In his most recent Three Lions selection, former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson believes England manager Gareth Southgate made one major mistake, according to the former Arsenal player turned pundit.

Switzerland and the Ivory Coast will be England's opponents in two friendlies that will act as preliminaries for the 2022 Qatar World Cup, which will take place this summer.

Despite being one of the early favorites to win this year's World Cup, England coach Gareth Southgate and his coaching staff are still finalizing England's tactical tactics.

Despite being one of the early favorites to win this year's World Cup, England coach Gareth Southgate and his coaching staff are still finalizing England's tactical tactics.

Merson, on the other hand, believes that the latter should have been included.

"Gareth Southgate should have selected Jadon Sancho instead of Raheem Sterling in his England squad," the ex-Gunner wrote in his column for the Daily Star.

"Isn't Sancho a better option than Sterling for the squad?" We are well aware of Sterling's abilities. We are aware that he will be attending the World Cup. In every game for England, Raheem Sterling is constantly on top of his game. Leave him out, because he has important games for Manchester City coming up. "As well as Sancho, please."

However, despite the fact that Sancho's performances are still far from what they were when he played for his old club Borussia Dortmund, it is clear that the young attacker has had a resurgence in recent weeks.

Sancho appears to be flourishing under Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick, as he is consistently named to the German coach's starting lineup - a situation that is not the case for the English national team.

Although it remains to be seen whether or not the £76.5m-rated winger can produce enough between now and season's end in order for Southgate to reconsider his decision, one thing is certain: if Southgate does not select Sancho for the World Cup in Qatar, England's attacking options can undoubtedly be considered among the best in the world.
