Manchester United's interest in a £60 million forward signing is farther advanced than Arsenal's.

As the two clubs ramp up their quest for a new striker ahead of the new season, it is believed that Manchester United's interest in Benfica's Darwin Nunez is further advanced than Arsenal's.

According to the Telegraph, Arsenal are looking to add a center-forward to their squad this summer and are interested in Benfica's striker, who is expected to fetch over £60 million.

It further claims that whatever interest they may have is said to be significantly less advanced than United's, who are claimed to be interested in playing two strikers up top next season, in which Nunez may be the ideal partner for Cristiano Ronaldo, according to a report published yesterday by The Athletic.

Both clubs will almost probably need to finish in the top four if they are to have a chance of signing the highly sought-after Nunez, who is also attracting interest from other countries.

Ronald Araujo and Darwin Nunez

According to the Telegraph, a move to Spain, where Atletico Madrid have expressed an interest in Nunez for some time, is presently the most likely option for Nunez. A year with Almeria will be his second stint in the country, following his first in the country with Almeria in the 2017-18 season. The striker joined Benfica that summer for a club-record cost of £20 million, setting a new club record.

To land the 22-year-old striker, both English clubs must finish in the top four this season.

Despite having played one more game than Arsenal, Ralf Rangnick's team are currently four points behind the Gunners, with Tottenham sitting three points behind them.

According to reports from Telegraph Sport, Benfica are eager to reach a decision on Nunez's future as soon as possible, with the club wanting to secure a significant transfer fee early in the transfer season.

To put it another way, if one of the two clubs can begin to pull away early in the top four race, they may begin discussions sooner and gain an advantage over any competitors both at home and abroad.

Arsenal will need to replace Alexandre Lacazette, who is expected to leave the club at the end of the season due to the expiration of his contract, and they will not want to miss out on another striker after failing to sign Dusan Vlahovic in January after Sky Sports reported their interest in the now Juventus forward.

As previously stated, Manchester United are on the lookout for a striker to partner with Cristiano Ronaldo next season, which would be extremely beneficial to the five-time Ballon d'Or winner.

The signing of Nunez is contingent on one of the club's teams finishing in the top four this season; if they do, they will hold the top spot for an extended period of time with the prolific Uruguayan on their side.
