Man Utd gets their desire as the Premier League confirms a change in the substitutes rule for next season.

After the 2019-20 Premier League season resumed amid the Covid-19 pandemic, clubs were allowed five substitutes.

From next season, the Premier League has confirmed that clubs would be able to make five changes.
After a three-month hiatus due to the Covid-19 epidemic, clubs were allowed to make five substitutions for the duration of the 2019-20 season, but the majority of clubs chose to revert to the three-subs regulation at the start of last season.

The Premier League, on the other hand, has announced that from the start of the 2022-23 season, the regulation would be changed permanently to allow for five substitutions. The rule is already in effect in Europe's other four major leagues.

The Premier League said in a statement: "The clubs came to an agreement to modify the rules regarding substitute players. Clubs will be allowed to make five replacements per match starting next season, three times during the game and one at halftime. On the team sheet, a total of nine substitutes can be designated."

At the outset of last season, United was thought to be in favor of preserving the five-subs regulation. Ralf Rangnick, the interim manager, likewise expressed his support for its restoration in December.

"As far as I recall, the five substitutes were implemented; it was determined that every team may substitute five players when Covid started one and a half years ago, and I think it was the appropriate decision to do that, to have more possibilities to change players, to save energy for players, especially if they had just just recovered from Covid," Rangnick added.

"And the same is true right now; we're in a position that's similar to the one we had one-and-a-half years ago, and I don't see why it shouldn't be the same as it was one-and-a-half years ago."

"As far as I'm aware, England is the only European country that only allows three substitutes. Five players can be substituted in the other four major European leagues. On the other hand, you're still permitted eight field players on the teamsheet, and you should be able to change five of them if you have eight field players on the teamsheet, but you can only replace three. On the bench, you'll always have five guys who can't be substituted and can't play."
