Erik ten Hag may employ a surprise assistant manager at Manchester United.

If Ajax manager Erik ten Hag ends up getting the post at Old Trafford, it is possible that he will make a surprise selection to serve as his assistant manager.

According to the Guardian, Ten Hag has so far pleased Manchester United during his discussions with the club that it is possible that he will bring Steve McClaren back to the club for a second stint as assistant manager.

Sir Alex Ferguson enlisted McClaren's services for a portion of their treble-winning season in 1998/99, as well as for the following two years, before launching his own management career.

Although his career has gone poorly since then, the 60-year-old dazzled while at Middlesbrough, gaining him the England position.

McClaren, on the other hand, is well acquainted with Ten Hag from their time together at FC Twente, where Ten Hag served as his assistant during that time.

If the pair were to reunite at Manchester United, it would be an interesting role reversal for them both, with McClaren taking on the job of assistant to Louis van Gaal.

According to the Guardian, though, the Red Devils are still contemplating Mauricio Pochettino as a possible replacement, with Ten Hag's appointment not yet a done deal.
