On the subject of Manchester United, Gary Neville is seldom short of something to say.
Although he has received a great deal of criticism, Neville is known for getting things right on a majority of the occasions. Because of his outspoken criticism of the United players, he has frequently found himself in the position of de facto spokesperson for the supporters.
Although Neville does occasionally make incorrect calls, it is true that he does so on occasion. United players went to sporting events during the international break, which he called "tone deaf." This made his attack on them seem old-fashioned, which could hurt his credibility when he questions them again. In his appraisal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's position, he was at times hypocritical.
One huge Neville error, on the other hand, was his increasingly strange plea for Diego Simeone, the manager of Atletico Madrid, to be considered as the next manager of Manchester United. As a result of his former club's Champions League loss to Diego Simeone's men, Neville had this to say: "However, removing Diego Simeone from his position as manager of Atletico Madrid has never been a realistic goal.
"He's tied down in there, he's wedded to it. However, seeing him in the Premier League would be fantastic. The evidence is there — I was defeated 2-0 in Valencia by his superb Atletico Madrid club, which Griezmann was a member of before to his transfer to Barcelona.
"Outstanding coach, severe in his approach to the game in every manner, I believe." He's a harsh manager, and Manchester United are in desperate need of a tough manager.
"Manchester United require a manager who can compete with Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola - they are the best in the world, so they require someone who can stand on the touchline and feel equal to them, and I believe Simeone is that manager."
To be fair, he did suggest Erik ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino as potential successors for the Reds, but the notion that a brutal manager is required to achieve success is out of date and is being disproven with each passing match for Atletico Madrid at the present.
Simeone's tactics were branded as a laughing stock when Atletico Madrid managed just one shot in 90 minutes and 30 percent control against Manchester City in the Champions League quarter finals on Tuesday night. A relegation battle-torn team defeated Atletico Madrid on Saturday, and the club's fate remains in doubt. It sounds familiar, doesn't it?
If the Glazers and Richard Arnold had heeded Neville's words just once, they would have come to terms with the fact that United were no longer on the same level as teams like Manchester City and Liverpool. A large part of Diego Simeone's bad football is a direct result of his team's inability to compete with higher-quality opponents.
Despite the fact that United are not yet ready to give up on their pursuit of major titles, the appointment of Simeone would have been the equivalent of doing so. At Old Trafford, it is expected that Ten Hag will be the next manager, which should be a source of great enthusiasm.
To get to this level of management, he has developed an appealing management style that has allowed him to rise quickly up the ranks. Despite the fact that Ten Hag does not have the star power of a Jurgen Klopp or a Pep Guardiola prior to walking through the doors of the Theatre of Dreams, what he does have is a vibrant, youthful energy that has the potential to propel the club to greater heights in the future.
