Following Manchester United's 4-0 thumping by Liverpool, interim manager Ralf Rangnick predicted that the club might make up to ten new players this summer, according to the Mirror.
At Old Trafford in October, Liverpool thrashed the Red Devils 5-0, and they came close to matching that total on an easy night at Anfield, where United's diminishing goal difference dropped them to sixth in the Premier League rankings.
Rangnick referred to Manchester United's supine performance as 'embarrassing,' and he emphasized that Liverpool's domination has been in the works for more than six years, extending back to Jurgen Klopp's arrival as manager in October 2015.
Rangnick compared Liverpool's roster to a fleet of Formula 1 cars, emphasizing that the Reds are'six years ahead of' United in the Premier League standings.
According to Rangnick, "we have to be critical of ourselves because how we played in the first 45 minutes was completely out of character with what we wanted to see and how we wanted to play." As a result of the fact that we were missing all of our defensive midfielders, who were all natural ball winners, we chose to go with a back five. In the following game against Norwich, where, if we are honest, they had five or six massive scoring opportunities, and if David [de Gea] had not been in goal, we could have easily allowed three or four goals at home, I made the decision to add an extra center defender.
"I don't believe our formation had anything to do with our performance in the first half." Because of the way we played, and the manner in which we conceded the opening goal, we were unable to prevent them from creating a transitional situation such as the one that occurred.
"It lowered our morale to a new low after we fell down 1-0. We made a move from a back five to a back four after the first half of the game did not go well (at half-time). Our performance in the opening 25 minutes of the second half was significantly improved; however, we were unable to capitalize on those opportunities and failed to score a goal. It's possible that would have changed the outcome.
"The manner in which we prepared the third goal, once again, was exactly the type of goal that was on the "blacklist" of things that we should avoid doing against Liverpool. A 12-yard pass into the hands of Anthony Elanga, who is not a player who is suited for this type of ball. They are looking for those types of balls, and we conceded the third one after that to them.
"This is where we are now six years ago when Jurgen came in and finished seventh in his first eight or nine games with the team he inherited. While he finished the season with a point average of 1.6, the team continued to improve with each subsequent transfer window, resulting in the group we have today.
"Neither I, nor my players, nor anyone else is to be blamed for what happened; instead, we must acknowledge what kind of squad they had available. When you look at their bench, you'll notice that only Roberto Firmino was out with an injury. Oxlade-Chamberlain was absent from the team, as was Minamino, while Harvey Elliott was absent from the squad as a result of injuries. This demonstrates the level of quality and teamwork they have developed as a result of their six-year collaboration with Jurgen and his team.
"In addition to player talent, what kind of mentality they have, how much energy and physicality they have as compared to high-speed players are all important factors to consider. I'd estimate that they have 25 Formula One cars in their stable of vehicles."
When it was stated that a similar six-year plan would be unlikely at United because of the short tenure of their recent managers, Rangnick responded, "I don't think so." "What's the harm in trying? The same thing happened in our own city with Pep [Guardiola].
"The two clubs that are presently dominating the Premier League did just that, as seen by their performances. In addition to bringing in two new managers, they also made a major shift in the team's shape, so what kind of players are they looking for? Was there a certain style of football that we wanted to play?
"'How do we want to play?' was the overarching theme of everything. And behind this banner, following every transfer window, they built the team that they currently have at both teams in the Premier League.
"It is not difficult to analyze the situation if you take the time to do so. The club need a rebuild, not because some players must be replaced, but because a significant number of players have no contracts left, or whose contracts are about to expire. It is evident to me that there will be six, seven, eight, or perhaps ten new players.
"And, before you sign those guys, you must decide how you want to play the game. Is there a specific style of football that the new manager wants to play? And then take it from there, bringing in every single player who fits that kind of profile with them.
