It's a huge loss. Manchester United had high hopes for Pogba's triumphant comeback in 2016. Instead, everyone – including Pogba – received false hope and a return to the mean for a club that has turned into a graveyard for careers and prioritizes the sale of items over all other considerations.
Although Pogba is an exceptional player, he is ultimately nothing more than a high-end footballer. The Frenchman isn't the core of United's troubles, but he's a very expensive component and symptom.
As with many of the new Manchester United players since Alex Ferguson's retirement, Pogba was duped into joining the club. In the midst of a Heritage Project, he arrived at a deteriorating stadium that was primarily focused on obtaining famous names for social media traffic and drawing in new sponsors, rather than an elite team.
Two years after his arrival, he was at battle with Jose Mourinho and alienating United fans in droves. He has continued to do this with his entourage in the years thereafter.
To hold Pogba responsible for United's woes is unfair and blatantly stupid, but he doesn't do himself any favors by doing so. He has enraged fans with his sluggish approach, public courtship of rival clubs, and purposeful undermining of previous managers. As evidenced by his outbursts toward Norwich City fans during the Easter Weekend match, Paul Pogba appears to feel mistreated in this regard. However, he may be able to show some sensitivity in this regard.
There is no explanation for a six-year lack of effort by the club, even in the face of all their mistakes. Pogba has proven time and time again to be a player who fails to even contemplate tracking back, pressing the opposition, or assisting a teammate in need. In the same way that many of his colleagues have expressed their displeasure, he has to put professional dignity ahead of his own career at some point.
This isn't just a thing that happens in a club. A large part of France's embarrassing showing in the European Championships was due to his carelessness and inability to pay attention. Even a half-decent Swiss club was able to highlight Pogba's deficiencies without the help of Kante and Matuidi.
He might feel wronged, but the truth is that the Frenchman isn't a world-class footballer and has been damned by something he can't do. He is a nice addition to a winning team, but he isn't anything more than a talented squad player who adds a little something more.
