Raphael Varane and Alex Telles have been lambasted by Manchester United fans after the Gunners took an early lead in their huge derby.
Having suffered a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Liverpool on Tuesday, United are eager for a strong response and three points in order to keep their Champions League ambitions alive. United have headed to North London in dire need of a huge response following Tuesday's thrashing. Despite receiving a barrage of criticism in the previous week and now having to prove themselves to a new manager in Erik ten Hag, United maintained their form at Anfield on Saturday.
A goal by left back Nuno Tavares in the first two minutes of the game gave Arsenal the lead. It all started with bad defending by Telles and Varane. Two half-hearted attempts at clearing the ball from a cross into the penalty area ended up in Bukayo Saka's hands.
The England international then had all the time in the world to cut inside and smash a goalwards shot that David de Gea made an outstanding save from. Nonetheless, because of the lofted style of the shot, there wasn't enough power on it for the goalie to knock the ball out of danger, and instead, the ball flew straight into the path of Tavares, who bundled it in.
It's understandable that going behind so early in such a crucial game hasn't gone down well with the fans. For the time being, a victory for United would bring them level on points with Arsenal and Tottenham, but a loss would see them fall six points adrift in the race for fourth place.
In a game where the stakes are so high, blunders of this size are catastrophic, and supporters have expressed their displeasure to both Varane and Telles in public.
