Gary Neville insulted Manchester United while implying that Chelsea still have work to do in order to qualify for next season's Champions League. Chelsea hosted London rivals West Ham on Sunday afternoon ahead of their hastily rescheduled trip to Old Trafford on Thursday night (7.45pm).
Although not to the same extent as championship challengers Manchester City and Liverpool, the Blues have dominated for significant swaths of this campaign, leaving Arsenal, Tottenham, and United in the dust. However, with two losses in three games, some speculated that Thomas Tuchel's club might fall short of the top four.
While analyzing their Sunday afternoon clash with the Hammers, pundit Neville made his season prediction and couldn't resist a jab at old club United in the midst of their ongoing troubles. United were defeated 3-1 by Arsenal, and Ralf Rangnick later accepted defeat in their bid to qualify for the Champions League.
Neville stated this afternoon on Sky Sports: "They've lost their last two [two of three], and there is an aspect of having to prevent the wheels from going off. You can see their position in the table and they appear to be at ease; they travel to Old Trafford on Thursday.
"That should be straightforward, but if they lose to United on Thursday, they will be dragged straight into a major crisis. They must have a professional demeanor.
Concerning Chelsea's confidence, Neville added: "I see why it's difficult for those guys after their performance in Europe, and I understand why they're a little down. They have a major FA Cup final coming up and they need to secure third place – because they still have a lot to do."
Erik Ten Hag has been appointed as the new manager of Manchester United.
