Zenit St Petersburg pokes fun at Manchester United following Brighton defeat.

This season, Manchester United fans have had to deal with a lot of trolls from their opponents, but few could have predicted this newest one.

On Saturday night, Manchester United found themselves on the receiving end of a curious dig from Russian side Zenit St Petersburg.

United were, of course, left licking their wounds after suffering yet another humbling defeat at the hands of Brighton, this time by a score of 4-0. After being put to the sword at the Amex Stadium, Ralf Rangnick's side appears to be on the verge of ending their poor season in an equally awful manner.

Manchester United are on set to finish with the fewest points they have ever collected in a Premier League season with one game still to play. The majority of the club's supporters will be relieved simply to have the season over with, having chanted 'you're not fit to wear the shirt' at their players on Saturday.

Because of the club's relegation, United fans have no doubt had to endure a slew of snide remarks from opposing supporters this season. After beginning the season confident in their ability to fight for the league title, they suddenly find themselves in risk of losing their place in the Europa League for the next season.

However, few supporters could have anticipated such trolling from as far away as Eastern Europe, despite the fact that some of their league opponents were no doubt preparing to do so. However, as the weekend shown, this was not the case.

After winning the Russian Premier League for the fourth time in a row with a 1-0 victory over Khimki on Saturday, you'd think the Russian club would have something more exciting to do in their celebratory period. As a substitute, the club posted a photo of defender Danil Krugovoy holding their latest trophy with the caption: "Hey @ManUtd fans, this is what a trophy looks like!"

Unsurprisingly, some Manchester United supporters were taken aback by the jab. In reaction to the trolling, several people voiced their disbelief at the source, while others chose to share photos of the team's imposing trophy case.

United will be hoping that they will get the opportunity to reply in kind in the following campaign. Having last tasted victory in 2017 under Jose Mourinho, they'll be hoping that with the appointment of Erik ten Hag as manager in the summer, they can put an end to their trophy drought.
