Ramos won't play in Qatar's World Cup this winter.
When they compete in their fifth World Cup this November, both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo will have a chance to make even more history than they already have.
Both of these aging superstars, who are now 35 and 37 years old, respectively, have ruled the world of football for the previous 15 years and each of them competed in their first World Cup in 2006. However, another legend of the contemporary game, Sergio Ramos, won't be able to put the same accomplishment on his resume after the competition that will take place in Qatar this winter.
After competing in the same four tournaments as Messi and Ronaldo, Ramos is now out of the Spain squad and is not likely to be called up by Luis Enrique in November. This is because Ramos played in the same events as Messi and Ronaldo.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the 36-year-old defender was left extremely disappointed after Enrique ignored him once again this month for La Roja's final two matches before the World Cup. The defender had proven his fitness this season after 11 games for Paris Saint-Germain. Despite this, Enrique did not select him for La Roja's final two matches before the World Cup.
The last time Ramos was called up to the Spain national team was in March of 2021, while he was still playing for Real Madrid. The veteran center back has made 180 appearances for his country's national team over the course of his illustrious international career, which includes one World Cup and two European Championship winners' medals. He is still the player with the most caps in his country's history.
Enrique acknowledged a week ago that there is still a possibility that Ramos will play in his fifth World Cup, providing a glimmer of hope for the veteran defender. "Any Spanish player who is currently available for selection is welcome to submit their name for consideration. I have no idea what the proportion of these players will be that will be competing in the World Cup "the former manager of Barcelona stated.
"You want eighty percent, right? Well 80... I really have no idea. After missing a year and a half of action due to injuries, it is extremely encouraging to learn that Sergio Ramos will be able to play again soon. Now, he is doing so in a manner that is uninterrupted. You can say whatever you want to me, but I believe that I have called the most talented players who play his position. The rest was a cloud of white smoke."
Messi and Ronaldo, on the other hand, are virtual locks to be called up by their respective national teams, Argentina and Portugal. It is anticipated that they will join the elite group of players who have competed in five World Cups alongside Mexico's ever-present midfielder, Andres Guardado, who is now 36 years old. This will be the case unless they suffer any unfortunate injuries.
Messi's Argentina are tournament favorites.
Ronaldo wants a successful farewell with Portugal.
Two other Mexicans, the renowned goalkeeper Antonio Carbajal and the iconic defender Rafael Marquez, have already competed in all five iterations of the tournament. The four-man list is rounded off by the great Lothar Matthaus of Germany and Gianluigi Buffon of Italy, the latter of whom is still active in the game and plays for Parma. Matthaus was a legend in Germany.
While there is no question that Lionel Messi will start for Argentina, one of the favorites to win the tournament, the question of whether Cristiano Ronaldo should continue to lead the line for Portugal is still up for debate. Ronaldo has had a string of performances that have been less than stellar. After their lackluster 1-0 loss to Spain on Tuesday, manager Fernando Santos gave a strong hint that Ronaldo will continue to be his main man up front in Qatar. It appears that Fernando Santos is not ready to give up on the superstar at Manchester United just yet.
When asked about his troubled captain, Santos responded, "What interests me is how the team played," in response to the question. "Ronaldo probably had three or four opportunities to score. Two extremely good ones, which is the standard number of points he gets. He was unable to score. It's a kind of football."
