After Manchester United's victory over Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday, David de Gea admitted that he would like to continue playing for Manchester United for "more years."
The Red Devils hierarchy has the option to activate another year on the goalkeeper's current deal, but the player's current contract will expire at the end of the current season because he will have reached the age of 31. Along with Diogo Dalot, Luke Shaw, Fred, and Marcus Rashford, De Gea is one of the five players who are anticipated to have another year added to their contracts in the summer. This is expected to happen for the primary purpose of protecting the players' respective values.
De Gea is one of the most respected figures within the dressing room at United, where he has spent more than a decade as the team's goalkeeper. He is also the club's second-highest earner, behind Cristiano Ronaldo, taking home approximately £350,000 per week. De Gea is paid by the club an average of £350,000 per week.
This season, Erik ten Hag has relied heavily on David de Gea as his starting goalkeeper. De Gea has started each of the 11 games that Erik ten Hag has coached and has two clean sheets to his name.
The former Spain number one goalkeeper was unable to do much about the goal scored by Alex Iwobi that put Everton in the lead early in the match. However, goals scored by notable summer signing Antony and club legend Cristiano Ronaldo were sufficient to send United back to Manchester with all three points.
After the game, the goalkeeper gave an interview to BT Sport, in which he discussed the game itself as well as how it makes him feel to be a part of the team 11 years into his tenure at Old Trafford. The Spaniard stated that his team had control of the game until perhaps the last ten minutes of play.
"It was a huge boost for our confidence, and we have to look forward to the games that are coming up." To be here is not only a privilege but also a great honor. Being in goal for the team today while they battled for three points was a wonderful experience.
"Obviously, I hope that I will be able to continue working here for many more years, but we will have to wait and see what the future holds. I am overjoyed to be in this location."
Due to the fact that Ten Hag and De Gea have different playing styles, it is unclear whether Ten Hag wants De Gea to be his No. 1 goalkeeper for the long term. The United stopper is a more passive last line of defense than the former Ajax boss believes is ideal, and his starting position is much closer to his goal line than Ten Hag prefers. In addition, the United stopper has a starting position that is much closer to his goal line than Ten Hag prefers.
Nevertheless, at this point in time, he continues to be an essential component of the Old Trafford puzzle, just as he has been for the better part of a decade.
