As a decision approaches concerning his future, David de Gea has admitted that he would like to continue playing for Manchester United "for more years."
The Spanish goalkeeper is heading into the final year of his contract, although the club does have the option to extend it for another year. De Gea signed a mega-money contract back in 2019, and he has maintained his position as the top goalkeeper at Old Trafford despite periods of poor play and a number of managerial changes.
Although De Gea was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson, he is now 31 years old, and there are still questions about whether or not Erik ten Hag wants him as his long-term goalkeeper. It is now up to the upper management of United to make a decision, but the goalkeeper, who has started each game so far this season, has expressed his desire to continue playing for the club.
After their win at Everton on Sunday, he said the following to BT Sport: ""Today, with the team battling for three points, it was great to be in goal," said the goalkeeper. I'm just very focused on the games and contributing as much as I can to the team's success. Obviously, I hope that I will be able to continue working here for many more years, but we will have to wait and see what the future holds. I am overjoyed to be in this location."
As a member of the Red Devils, De Gea has taken the field almost 500 times and has previously played for the teams coached by Jose Mourinho, Louis van Gaal, and now Ronaldo Ten Hag. The Dutchman is still working to implement his style in Manchester, but he might look into alternatives if De Gea is unable to be more influential when he has the ball at his feet.
Additionally, Ten Hag and the club need to make a decision regarding Dean Henderson, who is currently playing for Nottingham Forest on loan from the club. In the past, there has been much demand for the Englishman to take over for De Gea as the primary goalkeeper, and he has had some limited success in doing so. On the other hand, earlier this year the player made some damning statements about the club.
The goalkeeper wants to extend his contract at Old Trafford.
The comments that De Gea made over the weekend are reminiscent of those that he made in the summer, when he described his desire to remain at the club and win a trophy before he retires. In an interview with the Daily Mail, he stated, "Of course, if it were possible, [I would stay]." If they want me to stay here for however long they want, I won't mind at all. If they will let me stay here, then I will most certainly continue to do so. I'm very content and at ease, and I have high hopes that we will achieve some measure of success before I leave.
During the summer, Ten Hag was looking for a backup goalkeeper who could put genuine pressure on his No. 1 keeper, and it is possible that he will continue his search once the transfer window re-opens. At this time, Tom Heaton serves as his backup, and Martin Dubravka, who just joined the team recently, is also a member of the squad.
