Fulham up the burden on sinking Leicester

Fulham 5 Leicester 3 the Visitors suffer a humiliating loss after two goals from Willian spark the carnage.

The Leicester owner, who witnessed his team being destroyed by a rampaging Fulham team that was unfortunate to only be up 3-0 at the break due to goals from Willian, Carlos Vinicius, and Tom Cairney, might worry that the worst is about to come.

Even though interim manager Dean Smith will highlight how his team made a brief comeback after Cairney made it four thanks to goals from Harvey Barnes and James Maddison, a missed penalty by Jamie Vardy, as well as another goal from the ever-reliable Willian, only added insult to injury for Leicester.

Leicester's worries are growing at the reverse end of the league standings as a stern-faced Srivaddhanaprabha watched Fulham continue their bid to attain a record points total in the Premier League through their current coach Marco Silva.

Smith will be aware that time is running out for his team as they cling perilously outside the relegation zone with just three games remaining against Champions League-chasing Liverpool at home, Newcastle away, and West Ham at home on the last day.

Given his disastrous tenure as Norwich's manager, Srivaddhanaprabha took a huge risk when he hired him last month to succeed Brendan Rodgers. However, the 52-year-old appeared to have inspired the team, as they collected up five points in the team's previous three games despite giving up the opening goal in each of those games.

But unlike the thrilling 2-2 draw against Everton last week, where Daniel Iversen emerged as the hero, Leicester's goalkeeper gave his team a mountain to climb inside the first 10 minutes.

Iversen was supposed to decide whether or not to come and grab the ball after Willian's free kick, but his hesitation paid him dearly as the ball slid past his reach and into the goal, much to the pleasure of the home crowd.

Following a swift Fulham break, Harrison Reed's attempt was wide, and Leicester nearly found a way back into the game after Barnes was just inches away from scoring a cross from Maddison.

When Joo Palhinha lost possession of the ball and feed Harry Wilson, Vincius took advantage of some sloppy defending from Wout Faes and Caglar Soyuncu to guide his shot past Iversen, which confirmed Smith's worst concerns.

Again, the visitors nearly immediately came back, and it took an incredible save from Bernd Leno to prevent a strong drive from the revitalized Vardy. Minutes later, the Fulham goalkeeper comfortably stopped another effort from Vardy.

Under Roy Hodgson's leadership in 2009, Fulham's goal of 53 points was successfully met, allowing them to finish seventh and go on the illustrious run to the Europa League final. Silva would have been pleased with his team's game management after getting ahead here and forcing Leicester to chase shadows, even though that may be above them this time.

After a brilliant run by Willian, Reed could have made it 3-0, but Iversen was able to achieve the save this time. Vincius then came near with a header after a cross by Kenny Tete.

Assistant coach John Terry was exposed to a storm of "Terry, what's the score" chants as he left the field while talking to Smith, perhaps pondering where it had all gone amiss. The inevitable came just before halftime compliments of Cairney to conclude a fluid play featuring Reed and Vincius.

Any thoughts of a stunning recovery were to be dashed as Cairney drove home his second goal of the day thanks to a quick break from the rampaging Tete after Barnes forced Leno into an earlier save in the second half.

To their honor, after Barnes smashed home Maddison's pass through a tight angle, Leicester roared back and gained some new confidence. However, Leno's full-length save to stop Vardy from converting from the penalty spot after the goalie pulled him down provided another more proof that this wouldn't be their day.

That was demonstrated when Willian, who turns 35 in August but already has five the English Premier League goals this campaign, beat Iversen from a distance for the second time. Maddison's penalty in the dying seconds and Barnes' second goal following excellent play from substitute Patson Daka were also met with frantic cheers from the traveling Leicester supporters, who had largely remained until the very end. It won't be easy in the coming weeks for the weak-willed.
