Two goals from Evan Ferguson help Brighton qualify for Europe

Leeds loses once more in the Premier League, putting them in danger of being dropped

Brighton 3 Southampton 1

After beating relegated Southampton 3-1 at home thanks to a brace from Evan Ferguson, Brighton almost certainly won't be playing in the Europa League but instead will be playing in the Champions League for the first time.

With a brace before the interval, the 18-year-old Irish international cemented his place in Albion's history and helped his team advance to their first continental trip.

When Mohamed Elyounoussi scored with a header to cut the lead in the second half, VAR disallowed a potential equaliser for the Saints, and Pascal Gross sealed the victory.

Brighton, currently occupying sixth place in the standings of the Premier League, hold an outstanding match to be played. It is plausible for the team to conclude the season with the same point tally as Aston Villa, their trailing counterpart in the rankings. However, this scenario necessitates a rather extraordinary feat of the said opponent club to outperform Brighton's superior goal difference on the match day. By achieving this outcome, Aston Villa would earn the opportunity to secure the coveted spot in the Europa League.

The significant event was commemorated by the presence of a musical ensemble from North Carolina State University, whose uplifting performance of Sweet Caroline on trumpets and sousaphones elicited a wave of excitement within the packed stands.

In the eighth minute of the match, Kaoru Mitoma narrowly missed scoring a goal, following an uncertain beginning for the host team. Earlier, Pervis Estupinan's endeavor to score from a distance was promptly thwarted by the opposing team goalkeeper, Alex McCarthy.

Theo Walcott missed a potential opportunity to provide Southampton with an advantageous position in the game after being left unmarked and receiving a cross from Carlos Alcaraz. However, he failed to convert the chance, sending his effort wide of the target.

Mitoma was afforded a second opportunity to score, which came about fortuitously when Jan Bednarek lost balance and enabled Mitoma to find room within six yards of the goal post. Despite being presented with a prime chance to score, the Seagull failed to capitalize, as the ball struck the post low and remained out of play.

Subsequently, Brighton secured an advantage in the match as a result of a notable performance by their 18-year-old player, Ferguson. He adeptly received a pass from his teammate, Alexis Mac Allister, near the boundary of the penalty area and skillfully delivered a low strike that traversed the goal line of Southampton's goalkeeper, McCarthy. This goal marked Ferguson's fifth score of the current Premier League season.

The second goal scored by Ferguson was the outcome of Mitoma's impressive maneuver in challenging Romeo Lavia for the ball at the midpoint of the field. The officials disregarded the protests of the midfielder who fell to the ground as a result.

Mitoma hastily descended the left flank before setting up the advancing Irish player, whose goal-scoring total for the current season amounts to 10 across various competitions, through a well-executed finish towards the lower left corner of the net.

During stoppage time, the Japan international player made a valiant effort to score an additional goal, however, the team was unable to secure more than a two-goal lead at halftime.

At the commencement of the second half, Gross made a feeble attempt towards Alex McCarthy, propelling the visiting team to assert their dominance by progressively infiltrating Brighton's jurisdiction.

In the 58th minute, the team managed to reduce the deficit as a result of Elyounoussi heading in a corner supplied by James Ward-Prowse. This event contributed positively to the scoreline.

Abruptly, it appeared as if Albion was experiencing a disintegration of all facets.

During the match, Ward-Prowse executed a pass to Theo Walcott who successfully dispatched the ball over Jason Steele. However, the spectators who were present at the venue let out a sigh of relief when the potential equalizer was ruled out after undergoing a thorough review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

Subsequently, Gross managed to further increase the lead of the hosting team by deftly collecting the ball, which had rebounded towards him following an aerial contest, and then meticulously deliberating before delivering his 26th goal in the Premier League for Brighton, thereby attaining parity with Glenn Murray and Neal Maupay to tie the club record.

Brighton, as well as their coach Roberto De Zerbi, exhibited a rising level of enthusiasm and a desire for additional opportunities to score. These opportunities were presented in the form of late chances through the players Mac Allister and Deniz Undav. However, there was no regret expressed by any of the Brighton players for their missed opportunities as the match concluded following a tense seven-minute period of stoppage time.
