Reps Seek Complete Elimination Of Fuel Subsidy, Discuss Method To Cushion Effects.

After enacting the report of its special committee that investigated the country's subsidy regime, the House passed the resolution.

According to the legislators, it would be in everyone's best interest if the Federal Government eliminated the subsidy entirely.

However, the members demand that the federal government immediately develop palliatives to mitigate the impact.

In addition, the report advised the government to acquire CNG buses as an alternative transport system with lower fuel consumption and to implement intermodal, regional, and national transport systems to facilitate the movement of large numbers of people throughout the country.

The lawmakers also requested that the office of the Auditor General of the Federation conduct a forensic audit to determine whether the N413billion borrowed from the CBN for subsidy payments was repaid following the passage and presidential approval of the 2015 budget.

In addition, legislators demand that all Direct Sales Direct Purchase (DSDP) contracts be suspended.

Recall that President Bola Tinubu announced the end of the petroleum subsidy regime in his inaugural address on Monday. A proclamation that has elicited diverse responses from various parties.
