Bayero passed away on June 6, 2014. Reflecting on the passing of the late monarch, Kwankwaso characterized Bayero as the protector of the entire Kano populace.

Former Kano State Governor Kwankwaso took to Twitter nine years after Bayero's death to pay tribute to the late traditional monarch.

He said: “On this day, we remember our late father, an indefatigable guardian to all the people of Kano. The late Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, who passed on nine years ago has left us with a legacy that we cherish and which we shall always protect. Allah ya jaddada wa Sarki rahama. Allah ya taimaki Kano da Kanawa, Ameen.”

Bayero was one of the most revered traditional rulers and Muslim leaders in Nigeria. He was well-known for his outspoken opposition to the dreaded Boko Haram terrorists.

Bayero, however, passed away in June 2014 at the age of 83 after a protracted illness, shortly after returning home from London, where he was undergoing treatment.

Before ascending to the throne, Bayero was a successful banker, police officer, parliamentarian, and diplomat, as well as a successful merchant.

This news source recalled that the emir's driver and two guards were slain when suspected Boko Haram fighters attempted to assassinate him in January 2013.

Although the Sultan of Sokoto is the most senior Muslim leader in Nigeria, the late Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, was widely regarded as the nation's most revered and influential emir.

His efforts to build peace and the way he always stayed out of Nigeria's sometimes murky politics were exemplary during his fifty years on the throne.
