Barau Jibrin, who desired to be Kano's governor, is elected vice president of the senate.

Political observers in Kano argued that the refusal of the APC state party leadership to field Mr Jibrin as its gubernatorial candidate was responsible for their defeat in the governorship election.

Godswill Akpabio and Barau Jibrin's joint candidacy for Senate Leadership became a reality on Tuesday when they were elected president and vice president of the 10th Senate Assembly.

Mr Jibrin, who represents Kano North Senatorial District, was elected vice president of the 10th Senate without opposition, while Mr Akpabio received 63 votes to defeat Abdulaziz Yari, the former governor of Zamfara State, who received 46 votes.

The election results were announced by Sani Tambuwal, the Clerk of the National Assembly. He stated that 107 of the 109 senators voted.

Mr. Jibrin was a leading candidate for the position of senate president before his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), endorsed Mr. Akpabio.

Earlier, Mr. Jibrin told reporters that he should have challenged Mr. Akpabio, but he ultimately decided to comply with the party's decision to allow for inclusivity.

Mr Jibrin was widely regarded as the APC's preferred candidate for governor in the recently concluded election until he was displaced by the state's former deputy governor, Nasiru Gawuna, following intense lobbying.

Some political analysts continue to believe that the APC's failure in Kano was due to its failure to nominate Mr. Jibrin as its candidate for governor.

The concession made to Mr. Jibrin for relinquishing the governorship ticket to Mr. Gawuna was that he would replace the former governor of the state, Abdullahi Ganduje, as the party's candidate for Kano North district senator.

Mr. Jibrin's victory over the candidate of the New Nigeria People Party (NNPP), Abdullahi Baffa, with 234,652 votes is a testament to his prominence in the zone.

Mr. Jibrin was initially elected to the upper legislative chamber in 2015, and subsequently re-elected in 2019 and 2023. In 1999, at the start of the Fourth Republic, he served as a representative for the Tarauni Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

As the former Chairman of Kano State Investment and Properties Ltd and Commissioner of Science and Technology for the state, Mr. Jibrin's popularity spanned all Kano districts. He represented Kano Central in the lower chamber before transferring to Kano North, where he was elected senator three times.

During his time in the House of Representatives and his three terms in the Senate, Mr. Jibrin sponsored a large number of legislation and motions.
