However, according to a letter dated July 3, 2023 from the Ministry of Arts and Culture that was delivered to the Ekiti State Hoteliers Association, the state administration has decided to cancel the planned kissing marathon. The point was driven home in the letter that any establishment that played host to the event would be subject to harsh repercussions.

Concerns were voiced in a letter that was sent out by the Director of Tourism, Adebanji Adelusi, on behalf of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dele Ogunsemoyin. The letter highlighted worries that the planned event, which was referred to as a "Kiss-a-thon," may damage the reputation of the state.
