Two fishermen from Neves in SaôTom and Principe who had been stranded for five days in the Atlantic Ocean have been rescued in Brass Council Area, Bayelsa State.
On Sunday, July 2, 2023, Antonio Sabino, 51, and Osorio Pires, 41, were reportedly rescued by a trawler fishing in the Gulf of Guinea and delivered over to fishermen from Okpoama-Brass, who brought them ashore.
The two fishermen have been turned over to Ebimiesigha Bebetu, the Divisional Police Officer of the Okpoama Division of the Nigeria Police Force.
According to the Chairman of the Okpoama Kingdom Security Committee, Chief Munalayefa William-Sinte, the men who appeared emaciated were clothed and fed before being turned over to the police.
Before being turned over to the police, he said, the visibly anxious fishermen were pacified with sign language because it was impossible to communicate with them due to the language barrier.
Chief Sinte also informed reporters that a fisherman from Ilaje, Ondo State, who resides in Okpoama, has been missing for more than a week, and that his colleagues have been searching the ocean for days.
In 2019, the decomposing corpses of two male fishermen from Sao Tome and Principe were discovered in a fishing boat that had drifted ashore in Okpoama.
Asinim Butswat, a spokesman for the Bayelsa Police Command, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday, July 3. He stated that the Divisional Police Officer of Okpoama Division, Brass Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, has taken custody of two fishermen who were rescued by the captain of a fishing trawler 50 nautical miles off the coast of the Atlantic Ocean.
According to him, the police authorities have established contact with a coast guard officer from Sao Tomé and Principe and are making concerted efforts to reunite the individuals with their families.
