“Release Nnamdi Kanu today and see unrest in the South East become history” — Actress Rita Edochie says

She urged the federal government to release Nnamdi Kanu if they want the unrest to stop.

Rita Edochie, a veteran Nollywood actress, has advised the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), in order to halt the unrest in the South-East.

Nnamdi Kanu was initially detained on October 14, 2015, for his participation in the separatist movement's advocacy. In April 2017, he was granted bail, but he was subsequently remanded in detention until his trial on charges of alleged terrorism at the Federal High Court in Abuja in 2021.

In order to exert pressure on the Nigerian government and secure Nnamdi Kanu's release, the separatist group IPOB implemented a sit-at-home order every Monday in the South-East region.

Although the order was later modified to be observed only on the days Mr. Kanu appears in court, many residents in the five South-eastern states (Enugu, Ebonyi, Imo, Abia, and Anambra) continue to fearfully comply with the Monday stay-at-home order.

Recent reinforcements of the sit-at-home order by the separatist group led to disturbances and acts of violence against those who disregarded the directive.

Rita Edochie took to Instagram in response to the unrest to implore the federal government to release Nnamdi Kanu if they wish for it to stop.
