When examining prior great Manchester United teams, there have always been genuine leaders. Men who will marshal and inspire the soldiers on and off the battlefield. Sir Bobby Charlton, Roy Keane, and Bryan Robson come to mind.

And this season, Erik ten Hag will hope that Andre Onana and Marcus Rashford will contribute to the leadership mentality he is cultivating at Old Trafford.

Since arriving from Inter, Onana has already made a notable impression. During Manchester United's preseason loss to Borussia Dortmund, the goalkeeper publicly reprimanded Harry Maguire.

The defender's clumsy back pass to the goalkeeper forced Onana to clear his lines, which ultimately led to Dortmund regaining possession and attempting to score. As soon as the ball was no longer in play, Onana ran straight towards Maguire to show his displeasure.

United star Lisandro Martinez, who played with Onana at Ajax, commented that the incident exemplified the goalkeeper's mentality:

“It's better for it, it's better for it. If you are focused, you can fight with your teammates as well, you need to make sure everyone is really sharp, but nothing happened.

"It's part of football. He (Onana) has a big personality, he can play football, he can deal with the pressure, he's really positive, he's a leader. That's the style of Manchester United.”

It demonstrates the mental shift Ten Hag has brought to the club, and the club must now secure players with the mental fortitude to not only survive, but thrive.

Rashford is another leader that has emerged since the Dutchman's arrival. The Englishman has revitalized his career over the past year. Ten Hag entrusted his faith and trust in him, and he delivered. Rashford has not only established himself as the top player for United, but also as one of the finest in the Premier League.

Rashford's remarkable debut against Arsenal at Old Trafford occurred eight years ago, and he recently signed a new long-term contract that places his faith in ten Hag's revival of this great club and the club's faith in their star forward.

While Bruno Fernandes may be the team's captain and Casemiro and Raphael Varane may be the most experienced players, Onana and Rashford have a significant leadership role going forward.
