‘Not now' - Roy Keane analogy for why Man United should delay Bruno Fernandes new deal.

According to one expert, Fernandes must re-establish his previous season's form before signing a new contract with Manchester United.

A new deal for Bruno Fernandes should be reconsidered by Manchester United.

With his performance at Old Trafford since his transfer from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020, the Portugal international is ready to sign a new five-year contract with the Premier League champions. Some observers, however, believe that despite having scored nine goals and assisting 14 others this season, the 27-year-old is not nearly at the peak of his abilities.

Others, including former Republic of Ireland player Tony Cascarino, have expressed concern over Fernandes' frequent remonstrating with teammates and referees when the tide is against United. Cascarino believes Fernandes should not be offered a new contract. In an interview with talkSPORT, he explained: "When you offer a new five-year contract to someone who has three years left on their current term, it's an odd set of circumstances to be in.

"He was an absolute genius... He scored a hat-trick in the first game of the season, against Leeds, when he faced them. "You said to yourself, 'Wow, this is going to be an interesting season for United'."

I'm frustrated by him because he has talent, but he's constantly flailing his arms around," he went on: In the middle of the game, it appears as though he is constantly criticizing and moaning about his squad."

As a former international teammate and current Manchester United captain, Cascarino has drawn comparisons to Roy Keane, who was renowned for his no-nonsense approach to the game. When it came to putting their teammates in their place, each player tackled the situation differently.

To which the 59-year-old said, "Don't get me wrong. That would be Roy Keane's way of getting back at you; there would be no waving of arms. In contrast, when you were playing, he'd have a go at you.

When a teammate has a go at me, I'd be fine with it, but I'd become irritated when a player turns his back on the play and is waving his arms and gets caught up in other issues while the game is going on." This is something that he (Fernandes) has been doing."

I don't think they should be offering him a contract yet," Cascarino said. Yes, I'd be willing to give him another contract once he reaches the point where he's playing to the Bruno Fernandes' liking, which I believe will happen within a year of his arrival at the club. No, not just now.
