Manchester United may eventually release two players signed two years ago.

Man Utd are out of the running for fourth and are short of players, but they can salvage something from the run-in.

Manchester United's business during the pandemic-affected summer transfer window of 2020 has yet to pay full dividends, but that could change in the coming weeks.

Although Cavani had his moments last season and Van de Beek may yet be saved by Erik ten Hag, neither Alex Telles nor Donny van de Beek can be regarded as huge triumphs from that window. That summer, United spent at least £25million on two teenage right-wingers, Facundo Pellistri and Amadou Bakayoko.

To attract foreign players before the new Brexit laws came into effect, United's academy worked hard in 2020.

It's been almost two years since Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid all poached out-of-contract players, and two of those teens might make their debuts against Chelsea tonight, or Brentford on Monday.

Alejandro Garnacho has been a bench player for three games. But with Jadon Sancho the latest attacker to be ruled out, the 17-year-old will almost probably have played for United by Monday.

Due to Harry Maguire's injury, Alvaro Fernandez may be called up to the matchday squad. The 19-year-old has trained with the first squad but is yet to be named on the bench.

As of right now, Fernandez isn't expected to start, but he could play a role in the team's bench. Luke Shaw is sidelined for the season, while Alex Telles has struggled.

With only 14 senior players available, Ralf Rangnick stated more teenagers would be added to the team ahead of the Chelsea game.

Garnacho, a two-year Atletico Madrid signing, was due to make his debut before the new injury woes. This season, he has shone for the Youth Cup and recently for Neil Wood's Under-23s, while also training with Argentina's Lionel Messi.

Despite their efforts, United have had to keep the hype surrounding the winger in check. His performances have made this increasingly difficult, and his signing a sponsorship agreement with Nike earlier this month was just another indicator of his growth. A first-team debut was always a possibility.

With the Under-23s having been one of the standout performances this season, it may come sooner than expected for Fernandez.

The full-back joined the club on a free transfer from Real Madrid and has improved his command of the English language since then. When it comes to attacking, he's been tremendously effective. He's also a very modern full-back in that sense, however his defensive game still requires improvement.

United's season has been a complete disappointment, and it is finally coming to an end. However, the next four games of the season could still bring some interest, as well as the opportunity to demonstrate that the 2020 transfer window could still deliver some gems for the club.
