Note: If you are a foreign national (even if you are from a war area), you are required to have a local legal residency and permission to work in the country of the fellowship to whom you're applying. This applies even if you are applying for a fellowship in a country that is not in conflict.

  • Candidates who have already earned a Ph.D., M.D., or an equivalent degree and are looking for beginning postdoctoral training in fundamental biomedical research, or who are in the latter stages of earning one of these degrees.
  • No upwards of one year of postdoctoral research experience, a PhD (or D.Phil. or similar), or an M.D. degree (or equivalent) earned no more than two years before to the deadline, are acceptable as candidates who have yet to begin postdoctoral research.
  • Foreign citizens may be awarded fellowships for research in US laboratories alone. The majority of applicants are expected to live in North America at the time of application.
  • Applicants who intend to spend their fellowship tenure in a laboratory where they have already completed considerable predoctoral or postdoctoral training will not be considered by the Foundation. The fellowship's goal is to widen postdoctoral training and experience, hence a considerable change of location is recommended.
  • Foreign students must get the necessary visa papers as mandated by US Immigration.
  • "Postdoctoral laboratory training" does not include clinical housestaff training.
  • Established scientists and advanced fellows' applications will not be accepted. Only early postdoctoral training is eligible for the fellowships.
  • Each year in November, a two-day Annual Meeting of Fellows is conducted, during which each third-year Fellow presents the results of his or her study.
Because it provides Fellows with the opportunity for scientific exchange and exposure to biomedical specialties other than their own, this meeting is a vital component of the Fellowship Program.
Acceptance of the fellowship is contingent on full attendance at the conference.
