After a particularly poor performance while representing England, Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has been urged to see a psychologist by Gary Neville, a former right-back for the club. Neville made this recommendation following Maguire's time spent playing for England.
The central defender, who also serves as the team captain, has had a terrible season so far, making just three starts across all competitions for the club that he captains. To make matters even worse, each of those three starts has resulted in a loss, specifically at the hands of Brighton, Brentford, and Real Sociedad in that order.
Things have not gone any better for England on the international stage, with Maguire playing a significant role in two of the three goals that England allowed Germany to score during their 3-3 draw at Wembley Stadium on Monday night. The two mistakes have only served to amplify the chorus of those who are demanding that the defender be benched in advance of the World Cup.
Maguire has received some words of advice from Neville, and the two have had a conversation about the next steps that Maguire should take in order to deal with the intense backlash concerning the quality of his performances.
"I've been there," stated the popular pundit who used to be a member of the band Three Lions. "Every player has. When I lost my confidence, I sought the assistance of a psychologist to get me through those moments. However, there is nothing you can do other than show up, try your best, and not give in. "
"At some point in the future, his form will come back. I would suggest he does what I did. I did end up going to see my primary care physician at Manchester United. I did end up consulting a mental health professional. You do at times require assistance from outside sources.
Gareth Southgate, the manager of England, is a fervent supporter of Harry Maguire. Southgate, however, has been the target of severe criticism and accusations of blind loyalty as a result of his commitment to picking the center-back seemingly every game despite the player's poor form. Maguire has one passionate supporter in Southgate.
England's Harry Maguire had a nightmare against Germany.
In the immediate aftermath of that exciting match against Germany, Southgate addressed the issue that was the focal point of everyone's attention and candidly explained his feelings on selecting Maguire.
The manager of the England national football team continued by saying, "I know everybody says he's important to me, he's vital to us! It's us. It's not me." "We chose him as one of our players because he is one of the players that provides us with the best opportunity to win.
"We should all want Harry Maguire to be playing frequently and with confidence. We should all want Harry Maguire.
"That is something that applies to a good number of players, but he is the one that everything lands on, so it must be a challenging environment for him. However, he is displaying a remarkable amount of character."
Many players would be fearing for their chances of making the plane to Qatar after losing their place at club level just over a month before the start of the World Cup. In all honesty, it is unlikely that Maguire will be one of those players despite the recent quality of his performance due to the fact that it has been lost at club level.
This is the reason why so many people are frustrated with both Maguire and Southgate: the defender's spot in the England squad appears to be a privilege that should be earned, but it appears to be a sure thing instead.
