AI authors are dominating the online bookselling market. Over 200 e-books in Amazon's Kindle store list ChatGPT as an author or co-author, including "How to Write and Create Content Using ChatGPT," "The Power of Homework," and the poetry collection "Echoes of the Universe," according to a recent report.

John T. Behrens, a professor of the Practice of Digital Learning at the University of Notre Dame, told Lifewire in an email interview, "These systems are intelligent in the sense that they are excellent at mimicking the patterns of words humans use, but not so intelligent that they can check for appropriate meaning, use, or specific facts." "We still need humans for that."

AI software makes it simple to write and publish a book through Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing store. According to Reuters, there are dozens of online tutorials on how to use AI to get published.

"New AI-based technologies, like ChatGPT, generate text that sounds remarkably like text generated by humans," Behrens said. "While these systems are especially useful as writing aids to suggest phrasing or create the first draft of a paragraph, the generated text can be connected to make chapters or even books."

In an email, Bob Rogers, CEO of data science business Oii.ai, noted that AI writing software's appeal is speed.

"My previous book on AI, with human co-authors, took four years to write," he remarked. "My recent book, "ChatGPT, an AI Expert, and a Lawyer Walk Into a Bar,""The Evolution of Creativity and Communication" takes a weekend."

In an email conversation with Lifewire, Hruy Tsegaye, CEO of Mindplex Media, an online magazine and showcase for AI products, suggested that readers had dropped their standards, making AI writing more appealing. He stated watching videos is replacing reading books.

"The art of writing is becoming obsolete, and video is accelerating that," he said. "The audience now has a lesser attention span, and content needs to be engaging and concise, which chatbots can undoubtedly help with—at the sacrifice of quality."

Behrens said AI software can be useful. As a writing assistance, it can speed up the writing process and give readers more content. However, "if it is being used as a substitute for human writing or editing, it could lead to very boring or even nonsensical or damaging materials that would be bad for readers."

Rogers suggested using AI software like ChatGPT for its speed and grammar. Since it may express any writing in various ways, it can add diversity to non-fiction.

"The biggest challenge is that ChatGPT writing, simply put, lacks flavor and spark," he continued. "It will not take a stand or twist a story, so authors still need to add their own touch to avoid bland and boring writing."

Tool or Cheat?

Rogers said AI writing software is advancing fast, but it won't replace human authors for fiction and high-quality non-fiction anytime soon.

ChatGPT writing is bland.

"It will replace a lot of mid-tier writing like social media posts, for example, since they usually include only one or two key facts," he said. "Letting ChatGPT develop several methods to present those information creates a good mix of stuff to share. Report copy follows specified formats, which ChatGPT makes easy.

Behrens said AI-based tools would help authors more. AI is autocorrect.

AI-based spell and grammar checkers replace small aspects of the writing process. "We can imagine this gradually expanding to larger texts," he said. "However, right now, these systems still rely on humans to determine if the words get the desired idea across and require human editing."
