The APC has zoned the position of Senate President to the South-South, with Senator Godswill Akpabio as the preferred candidate and Senator Jibrin Barau of the North-West as Vice President.

Tinubu, according to sources, while addressing over 43 APC senators-elect led by Senator Akpabio at the Aso Rock Villa late Wednesday night, made a passionate appeal to them to toe the lines of the party’s zoning arrangement in electing their presiding officers, stressing that it is the right thing to do in support of the Renewed Hope agenda of his administration.

"At this juncture in our nation's history and in light of the challenges we face as a new administration, all hands must be on deck to salvage the unpalatable predicament confronting the country.

"We must view the situation as a pan-Nigerian effort by the executive and the legislature to address the nation's challenges," he emphasized.

The President stated that the mission of finding solutions to the numerous national problems cannot be accomplished by the executive branch alone, but rather by the executive and legislative branches working together.

He added that the senators-elect present at the meeting should reach out to those who were unavoidably absent and urge them to toe the party line and restrain all personal ambition in favor of the party's program and national interest.

Give the Renewed Hope agenda an opportunity to succeed by communicating with your colleagues who are not here to toe the party line. The elephant is large enough for all members and Nigerians to partake in the Renewed Hope in due time, he cautioned.

Earlier on at the meeting which ended around 11pm, Senator Akpabio congratulated the President on his successful inauguration and stated that since the party announced the zoning arrangements for the leadership of the National Assembly, majority of the party’s senators-elect, led by him and Senator Barau, had reached out in consultation to other senators-elect, including those from the opposition political parties with positive result and pledge of support.
