Manchester United believed that they had found a player similar to Pep Guardiola when they gave Sofyan Amrabat his first start for the team as a left-back. They did not.
The player who was borrowed impressed everyone in the Carabao Cup match of Manchester united against Crystal Palace. But the truth is that Amrabat cannot replace John Stones or Kyle Walker as a full-back who can also play as a midfielder.
The 27-year-old had a really bad time during their second game against Palace in the Premier League. They also had a disastrous game against Galatasaray. United have lost a lot at Old Trafford in the past 10 days.
While opponents' managers and players have been critical of their signing on the last day of the transfer window, Manchester United fans have not criticized him in the same way. Indeed, it is understandable that Amrabat has made a genuine effort to tackle a problem that he was not originally expected to solve when he joined Manchester united.
"I told the manager that I am willing to play anywhere he needs me, even as a goalkeeper," Amrabat said to Sky Sports after his first full game. I will play in any place possible to assist the team.
I played as a left-back, but I had the freedom to move around and play in midfield a lot. I'm not normally a left-back, but I wanted to help the team by providing more choices. It was fine. You should appreciate Amrabat for more than just being honest.
Amrabat has shown in later games that he is not a left-back. His success in the Carabao Cup match, where he found open spaces between the lines, may have been due to the poor performance of the Palace team rather than his own skills. This was the first of two back-to-back visits to Old Trafford for Palace.
Amrabat really wanted to make a good impression after his dream move. He spoke very well after the win and showed how much he is willing to play in different positions for Ten Hag. This shows a lot about his personality and loyalty to his old manager at FC Utrecht. His skills and positive approach will ultimately improve the midfield.
But first, there is one last small obstacle for the Moroccan World Cup hero to overcome as a supporting defender before that. Because Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia, and Sergio Reguilon are injured, Manchester United will have to use temporary solutions once again. Unfortunately, Amrabat will be the one to be replaced.
But United can make things easier for him and themselves by moving Amrabat and putting Diogo Dalot in his place. This will help the midfielder feel more comfortable because he will be able to use his stronger foot. Dalot played well as a left-back before the Amrabat experiment, and he has done that job many times before.
It might make them less effective at attacking, but United would be more solid and well-organized. After losing two games in a row at their own home, they must be thinking about it.
We will have to wait until after the international break to let Amrabat loose in the engine room.
