On a night when his side lost 1-0 and 2-1 on aggregate, the Brazilian exuded confidence.
To begin, the midfielder produced an exquisite flick to find Jadon Sancho, igniting a United counter-attack.
And moments later, he demonstrated the dexterity he possesses in his game.
He was played in on the left flank but picked up the ball alongside the touchline with Stefan Savic breathing down his neck.
Most players would have sought an easy ball out, but Fred shown quick feet to flip the ball past his marker – but lacked the poise to pick out a red shirt in the penalty box's center.
Later in the first half, Fred demonstrated the essence of his game by gaining the ball back in midfield and backheeling to Bruno Fernandes.
Since Ralf Rangnick's arrival, the 29-year-old has looked like a different player and has even contributed goals on occasion.
He was recently lauded by Roy Keane, a pundit who has frequently criticized United's midfield in the past.
Fred is also getting a kick out of his new role under Rangnick, which allows him to play closer to the attack.
And it appears as though the role has restored Fred's confidence in supporting the attack - he recently helped Scott McTominay on a goal.
The fact that he was chosen over Paul Pogba for this tie demonstrates Rangnick's confidence in him as well.
Despite his best efforts, he was unable to prevent Manchester United from exiting the Champions League as they lost 1-0.
