Manchester United can't ignore away fans' chanting after Brighton incident

For Manchester United, the season culminated in a biblical defeat at the hands of Brighton, as the fans turned against the players.

Pascal Gross added a third goal in the 57th minute to complete the comeback. Manchester United lost a game that was both obnoxious in name and depraved in nature, and the scoring did not stop there.

"You're not fit to wear the shirt," mutinous United supporters chanted as the stadium waited for the fourth goal for an unusual amount of time. There will be no legal action taken against any of the players.

United's players were made aware of this during their match against Norwich three weeks ago at Old Trafford. It was a watershed moment at the time, and the revolt among the away-dayers is no more militant than it was then.

"Man United will never die," said one rallying cry. "We'll keep the red flag flying high, because Man United will never die," said another. United, on the other hand, has stagnated and is in desperate need of the open heart surgery that Ralf Rangnick has identified.

They began screaming Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's name, evidently in solidarity with him because he was forced to manage the shower in front of them, according to the report. The players were praised by Cristiano Ronaldo at the end of the game, and David de Gea sheepishly lifted his hands. "You're not fit to wear the shirt," they chanted at one point.

"How s—t do you have to be? We're having success at home "The Seagulls screamed in delight. Until Manchester United surrendered their weapons, the Seagulls had only beaten them once in the league at the Amex this season.

Four defeats for Manchester United have been handed out by Liverpool (twice), Manchester City (once), Leicester City (once), Brighton and Watford (twice). Perhaps Michael Carrick should have taken advantage of the opportunity to extend his 11-day honeymoon as caretaker.

United suffered a Biblical defeat in the midst of an apocalyptic season, eerily similar to the Easter Sunday defeat at Everton three years ago. There has never been a worse season for the Red Devils, and this is without a doubt the worst United team in history. Since 1978-79, they have conceded 56 goals in the Premier League, the most in a single season in the top division. Although Dave Sexton's soldiers failed to reach the FA Cup final, the Red Army had Jimmy Greenhoff at Hillsborough to help them out.

This anodyne side was highlighted by the fact that Edinson Cavani, whose head had hardly been in the country as much as his body had, was the most urgent player to restart after Marc Cucurella thundered in the second goal on 49 minutes. With barely 49 minutes remaining on the clock, United looked like a zombie horde as they shuffled back into position on the field. It could have been as many as 90 people.

United wanted it to come to an end. Brighton, on the other hand, did not. The look of disappointment on their fans' cheeks as they just missed out on a fifth goal from Danny Welbeck as they threatened to inflict a Premier League-record defeat on Manchester United during the current season. The crowd chanted, "We want five!" in unison.

The disarray within Manchester United's squad was all too evident. Rangnick, Bruno Fernandes, and Cristiano Ronaldo had to tell Alex Telles where he needed to place himself on the field. For Ronaldo, Fernandes, who is prone to berating any teammate, was willing to make an exception.

Leandro Trossard was fouled in the box, and Darren Fletcher and goalkeeping coach Richard Hartis made a futile request for a handball. The fact that they told one of the players to approach the referee was less pathetic. The Video Assistant Referee was unyielding in his criticism. After an hour, the score had risen to 4-0.

While behind closed doors, United won three of their four games at the Amex Stadium, scoring three goals in each victory. The last time they played in front of a crowd, they were defeated by three goals under Jose Mourinho. This time, it was far more serious.

The Red Devils once again demonstrated their true colors in a season in which the adrenaline rush that matchgoers provide has rocked nearly every regular squad player. Finishing second in a sterile environment in front of a limited audience was deceiving in the extreme.

However, in a season in which anything that can go wrong will go wrong, Moises Caicedo was destined to score against Manchester United. He may never be considered a member of the United "ones who got away," but he was fated to score against them.

Negotiations for Caicedo were called'messy' by United last year, prompting the club to withdraw from the process. The defensive midfielder Caicedo, who had previously represented Ecuador at the international level before joining Sussex, could have filled the gaps in a midfield that was prone to mistakes, as he and teammate Yves Bissouma oversaw. Either of these would be beneficial to the United team.

Only a few weeks ago, Caicedo made his first Premier League start against Arsenal and has since maintained his place in the Brighton team, contributing to victories against the Emirates, Tottenham, Wolves and most recently a 5-0 thrashing of Manchester United. The goal he scored to cap up his first season in the Premier League was calm and composed.

United's defensive midfield has been a persistent problem, and the club is now considering a £60million purchase in Kalvin Phillips. Four top-eight scalps in 15 months for Caicedo, a £5 million signing by Brighton. It was clear that Scott McTominay was suffering from an inferiority complex, as he committed four fouls in the first 50 minutes.

How appropriate it was that Caicedo's pinpoint strike was spurred by reluctance from McTominay, a player who United cannot program into a defensive mindset despite their best efforts. A loose ball was left for each other by McTominay and Victor Lindelof, a headed clearance by Telles failed, and Caicedo had enough of time to size up a shot that drifted past a befuddled David de Gea in the second half.

'You're just an s—t, Jesse Lingard,' Anthony Elanga said at United's Jesse Lingard on this most recent bad day. Elanga was substituted for Cavani rather than Lingard after failing to make it past half-time. Cavani's name was chanted by a small fraction of Manchester United supporters.

As the clock approached the end of the game, United fans screamed 'Viva Ronaldo,' almost as if to exonerate him of their charge that the other players are unable to wear the shirt. They certainly aren't.
