Ten Hag during first-team training.
Tobias Schweinsteiger was captain of Bayern Munich II when Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was in charge.
That era also coincided with Manchester City's Pep Guardiola being in charge of the Bundesliga giants' first team, which means he can offer unique insight into both managers ahead of the first Manchester derby between the duo on Sunday afternoon
Schweinsteiger is the older brother of former United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger. He currently manages Osnabruck in the German third division, but he has found time to discuss the tactical merits of Ten Hag and Guardiola in advance of this weekend's match.
The German praised Ten Hag for his tactical changes over the past few weeks, and he also predicted that Ten Hag would be working on counter-attacks and transitions in training prior to the Reds' visit to the Etihad Stadium, with Marcus Rashford expected to play a key role in that matchup.
During the current campaign, Rashford has contributed three goals and two assists, and he has shown a pattern of scoring goals against Man City.
In an interview with United's internal media, Schweinsteiger stated, "I think the coaches are both quite the same." "They are both very skilled in the strategic aspect, have a very positive impact on the team, and are very good at details, analyzing other teams, and coming up with solutions. Both of them are very good at what they do.
"It will be interesting to see who plays more football, and I had a lot of optimism about the match between United and Liverpool. They played long balls and went for the second balls rather than playing short balls during the goal kicks.
"Against one of the best pressing teams, for me, this was a good coaching plan from Erik. If City press with two strikers or one striker and Kevin De Bruyne, and play a three-man build-up, but there will be a lot of tactics in the match.
"You need to have a very good mental strength to win that match because you have to defend your goal at all times and you can't afford to show any mental weakness for even one or two seconds because they have the potential to kill you. That would be a big key factor in the match.
"They did really well with counter-attacks in the last matches so I think this could be a big chance, especially with Marcus Rashford. I can imagine that United could play a bit more defensively and go for counter-attacks.
"I believe that he has played really well in the matches that have taken place over the past few weeks, and if you can find a way to counter with him, he could be a weapon for you in this game. I remember seeing a lot of things from Erik, especially during the training sessions, but I don't think we countered enough or did as well in the transitions after we won the ball.
"I think that can be a part where he can be working on with the team in the last weeks as that looked like they had trained more on this than we did in the past, on the transitions. I think the coaches respect each other.
"I am familiar with these coaches, and I know that they will concentrate on their teams and the strengths of their teams. As a result, it will be interesting to see who is concentrating more on their team's strengths, and who is concentrating more on the other team."
